What is first name "Polly" short for?

What is first name "Polly" short for?

Just wondering if anyone knows what name Polly is the derivative of? Could it be Elizabeth? My great aunt has identified an old lady in an old family photo as 'Auntie Polly' and I was hoping I could identify who she was actually related to if I knew what Polly was the nickname for.

Thanks in advance.

Just to clarify: Polly is a variant of Molly (which in itself is a pet-form of Mary). Polly now stands as a name in its own right.

I think you will find that Polly is usually associated with the name of Mary, my aunt was similarly known.
Hope it helps.

It used to be a common nickname for girls named Mary in the 18th and 19th centuries. There were quite a few nicknames for girls named Mary because it was such a common name - Mollie, Mamie, Mimi and Minnie are some of the others.
