Eleanor Swift Reeve, of Manchester by the Sea and Mt. Desert, Maine died at home on March 25th, 2003 at age 86. She was born May 14th, 1916 in Boston, MA to George Hastings Swift and Lucille Casey Swift. Her grandfather, Gustavus Franklin Swift, was the founder of Swift & Company, and her father George H. Swift, was in charge of the company's eastern business and a director of the packing company until his retirement in 1949.

Mrs. Reeve attended the Ethel Walker School, graduated from The Winsor School, and continued onto Vassar College. She was married on May 13th, 1938 to Lawrence Lowell Reeve with whom she enjoyed 64 years of marriage until his death in October of 2002. Mrs. Reeve devoted her life to raising her eight children. Mr. and Mrs. Reeve traveled extensively, usually with their children, in this country and abroad. She was an avid outdoors woman who relished hiking in Maine, Switzerland, and on numerous trips to Nepal.

Mrs. Reeve was predeceased by her husband, Lawrence Lowell Reeve, a son, Lowell Swift Reeve, and a grandchild, Phoebe Swift Reeve as well as her sisters, Ruth Van Nice of Chicago, Lucile Davis of Lake Forest, IL and her brother George H. Swift of Lake Forest, IL. She leaves her children: Cassandra Reeve Stone, Corinna Reeve Waud, Cintra Lowell Reeve, Abbott Lawrence Reeve, Victoria Reeve Spaulding, Josiah Stanley Reeve and Alfred Roosevelt Reeve and 14 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 5th at 10:30 a.m. at the First Parish Church, 10 Central Street, Manchester by the Sea, MA. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Friends of Acadia, 43 Cottage Street, Bar Harbor, Maine 04609.

Lawrence Lowell Reeve
90, a noted architect and entrepreneur of Manchester by the Sea, MA and Mt. Desert, ME died on October 4th after a long illness. He was a relative of U.S. Presidents Theodore and Franklin Roosevelt and Abbott Lawrence Lowell, President of Harvard University. In a career spanning more than 60 years, Mr. Reeve pursued a variety of professional interests. He was a partner in the architectural firm of Anderson, Beckwith, Haible and Reeve, which designed buildings for commercial clients and educational institutions, both domestically and internationally. Upon retirement from the firm he continued to practice architecture, completing numerous projects for residential clients. Mr. Reeve owned Seamloc Loma-Loom Carpet Company of Sanford, ME for many years. Seamloc was recognized in the industry as a high quality and innovative producer of residential and commercial carpet. In addition, he was a real estate developer who assembled almost 300 acres in Beverly and Danvers, MA for multi-family and recreational use, among other projects. Mr. Reeve was born on April 5th, 1912 in Philadelphia, PA and grew up in Haverford, PA. He received a Bachelor's degree from Harvard University in 1935 and a graduate degree in architecture from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He served in the Navy during World War II. Mr. Reeve was an avid outdoorsman and keen sailor who enjoyed cruising the Maine coast on his sailboat Narcissus. As a young man he was an enthusiastic equestrian. Mr. Reeve is survived by his wife of 64 years, Eleanor (Swift) of Manchester by the Sea, MA; three sons, Abbott of Manchester by the Sea, Stanley of Boston, MA, and Alfred of Wenham, MA; four daughters, Cassandra Stone of Newport, RI, Corinna Waud of Lake Forest, IL, Cintra Reeve of Manchester by the Sea, and Victoria Spaulding of Hamilton, MA; 14 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Katharine Draper of Chadds Ford, PA, Diana Reeve of Haverford, PA, and Leila Bright of Northeast Harbor, ME. He is pre-deceased by his son Lowell who died in 1972 and an older brother, J. Stanley Reeve of Florida. A memorial service will be held on Saturday October 26th at 10:30 a.m. at the First Parish Church, 10 Central Street, MANCHESTER BY THE SEA, MA.
