Old Valley County Jail

Old Valley County Jail

I and my husband bought the property on which the old Valley County jail is located in Cascade, Idaho. We know that the old jail was built about the time Cascade became the county seat, about 1916. I was born and raised in Valley County, Cascade. My parents, Burl and Freda Allen (Potts) were born and raised in Valley County. I know that my paternal grandad, John Allen (Jack) even spent some time in the old jail long ago. Still I know vertually nothing about the history of the jail. I would love to know some stories about the 'guests' who spent time there. I would be interested in knowing who built it. If anyone has stories they would like to share with me I would so appreciate it.

Hi Sharon,

Can't tell you much about the jail (I left Cascade before I was old enough to spend time there). However, I believe that I was a classmate with your mother Freda. Would she now be about 73 years old? I attended elementary school in Cascade and left there when about 12 years old. If she is still alive, please give her my regards.

Hi Wes, Yes Freda was my mother. She passed away back in 1979. She would be 76 years old had she lived.

I am happy to 'meet' a classmate of hers from her childhood. I am always interested in hearing stories about my parents childhoods so if you have memories of Mom to share I would love to know. Please feel free to email me at my email addy.

My Dad was Burl Allen. Did you know him as well?

Take care now.
Sharon K.

My G-Grandfather was a "guest" at the Valley County Jail during his trial back in July/August 1919. The Valley County Sheriff at that time was Edward A. Smith. My G-Grandfather, Charles A. Ernst Jr. was on trial for killing a man on the Middle Fork of the Salmon River. My G-Grandmother, Frances Cooper Ernst was also a part of the whole thing and actually may have had an affair with the Sherrif during the trial. They had no place to put her in the jail during the trial so she stayed at the Cascade Hotel under "close" supervision of the Sheriff. In the trial it came out that she was seen going out to the lakes, around town, and even to the picture show with the sheriff. If you look up the Cascade paper during the end of July and beginning of August 1919 there was a couple of front page articles about the trial. If you have any questions or want to know more you can e-mail me.

The Winter-Fall 2008 issue of "The Mountain Light/the newsletter of the Idaho State Historical Society" has an article abt. the Ernst case.

According to the article, Don Ian Smith and Naida West have also written a novel entitled "Murder on the Middle Fork" based on this case.

The victim, Julius Reberg, lived two miles south of the Ernst tent camp on the Valley County side of the Middle Fork.

Hello Wes, please accept my opologies! I'm afraid I haven't visited the Valley County web site in quite a long while so I missed your inquiry about my Mom, Freda(Potts)Allen. I'm sorry to say Mom passed away back in 1979. She was just 53. All of Mom's siblings except for her baby sister Patricia (Pat Haskins) have passed on. I am always happy to meet people who knew and remember my Mother and Dad (Burl Allen),seems like they are few and far between these days.

In 2004 you left a message on a message board for ancestry.com regarding the old valley co jail. I am a great great niece of Julius Reberg and would love to hear any stories you might have about the trial or murder. I have a faded copy of a letter your g grandma wrote to our family after the murder but before the trial. She wanted them to hire a particular laywer. If you have an info and would be so kind as to email me at Julie_Reberg@ yahoo.com.

Sincerly yours,
Julie
