Gallardo is a Spanish name which means "gallant". There is a famous family of Bullfighters in Spain with this name and also is the name of a breed of bullfighting bulls. The latest Lambourgini car was named the Gallardo Lambourgini after the fighting bulls of Spain. (All Lambourginin's are named after bulls--hence the insignia). The name Gallardo is found in all countries that were conquered by Spain. Often it is confused with Italian since it is not common here in the US. It is found in Italy and I have also seen a French version of it spelled Gallardeaux. I hope that shed some light on it.

Hello cousin, I'm a Gallardo from El Salvador. I found out that the name comes from Spain's central region of Aragon and that it was first mentioned in records in 1693. According to my grandpa, my great-great grandfather moved to El Salvador directly from Spain sometime in the 1800's.

Hi Araceli,

My family name is also Gallardo, and my family is from the Philippines (which was a Spanish colony for about 3 centuries beginning in the early 1500s). My great grandfather who was believed to be of Spanish descent was the carrier of the name. I'm actually surprised that you mentioned you had Indian/Arabian features in the bloodline, because my aunt described my great grandfather's (her grandfather's) appearance the same way. I wonder why this is. Is it common in the bloodline, or are we actually long lost cousins? Haha

In regards of Camilo's comment of Gallardo's being from Argentina is 100% wrong. Now, there is and seems to be a vast mojority of Gallardo's from Argentina, my own roots came frm there, then thru the north coast of Honduras, Tela.

But originally gallardo's came from the Cadiz region of Spain. The Gallardo breed was created in the XVIII century. It draws its name from Francisco Gallardo and his brothers - cattle breeders at (of the) Santa Maria (Cadiz)region - who, thanks to the good results obtained by their bulls' behaviour in the arena, reached a considerable prestige in the most important plazas de toros. Bottom line though is that ... none the less that was a long time ago.

Also keep in mind that if you have mixed breed's or outside the original Spanish race (ie. Mexican natives Indians, or any type of Americas native indians all thru out latin america or excile Arabs), wether in Mexico, USA, and or South America. The new Gallardo's are a whole new breed of their own. But not say the least still a Gallardo or an Americas Gallardo.

As for those who have not mixed too much with other races, as for my self ... then you are a true Bull !!! un verdadero toro Gallardo.

That is very interesting, I am from Ecuador and have Indian features. I spoke to my Granfather many tears ago that was born in 1902 and he told me that his great granfather came from Argentina. My father and granfather are very light skin. They do have one facial feature which I also have, which is the bone below the eyebrow is thicker and pretures like a 1/4 inch. This is more then I have seen in most people.

wow, this thread dates back to 2004. Well, I'm a Gallardo too. For the past 5 years, we have been having a major yearly reunion here in the Philippines. (except for last year) And my relatives say that they can trace our history back to the 1800's. (I just don't know where they check it) Reunion will be this coming May 15-17, 2008 at Loay Bohol, Philippines. It's fun to meet cousins and aunts and uncles. From what I have observed, we seem to share the same love for music, food, gatherings, fun and writing as well. We sure do have someone in the family who can keep us all laughing the whole night as he speaks in front of everyone.

Hi cousins, I am Antonio Gallardo. I have been researching about the history and origin of the Gallardo's and found out, that the first Gallardo recorded was as early as 7th century, and originally came from southern France. And spread all around Europe, and was a noble Spanish family name as well, comissioned by King Phillip as nobles, marquis and aristocrats as well as knights. Our name means happy, joyous, and brave. We are direct descendants of the real Conquistadores. I did'nt know anything about this until one day I met a spanish guy in an airplane and we came to talking and asking each names, and when he told me about the meaning of my name, which is about everything you would want your name to be. I was proud in a good way and hence my researching, and found out our name is an ancient, original and honorable name that all of us should be very proud of having. So we could all say that every Gallardo all over the world are related and came from the same roots. I said ancient and original, because when the spaniards colonized the Philippines in 1521. They gave the Filipinos Spanish last names, but not the original Spanish last names. That is why there are surnames that you would not be able to trace back as far as ours. My grandfather is a peninsulares. Island born pure blood Spanish Portuguese, Col. Emilio Antonio wenceslao Gallardo. He was a colonel who fought in the 2nd world war and his father is a colonel too for Gen. Andres Bonifacio, Col. Attillano Gallardo, who fought in the 1st world war. One common trait I noticed about us is that we adore our fathers, and we are fair, loving, helpful, generous, brave, and would not stand stand for injustice. Now I know why. It is just fitting that our name be named for a raging bull. And our name has stood the test of time, and our blood is all around the world. Viva Gallardo's!!!

Oh, I forgot to add. We even have our own Coat of arms. Look for it on line, and you would find it. It is the Coat of arms used by our ancestors as a flag and an arm band band to distinguish our family in battle in ancient days. And only the nobles can have it for the commoners have a different sort, it is called a bugher arm. We can all have our own coat of arms, family crest. that we could buy online, that we could show and tell to our children, and the generations to come so they can find out about our rich family history. Oh Senzeasian, I have heard about the famous Gallardo family gathering in Bohol, can you email me at antonioygallardo@hotmail.com so I may attend in the future?, and also I was told about a reunion that also happens in Bicol. they say that all Gallardo's are welcome and recognized. And also here in America, where they even have a website and contact details, with pictures and details about our families, and their order from King Phillip here in America. You can all find out about it and you would see our relatives from all around america.
