Surnames: gilhooly
I am trying to trace my Great great grandfather. He was Thomas Gilhooly married to Ann McDiarmid (could be McDermott) from Ireland, possibly Roscommon area. My great grandfather was born in 1848 in Ireland he was also named Thomas Gilhooly. He came over to Scotland, Edinburgh area and married Mary Barrett in 1873 who ancestors were McGuire and Dolan from Cavan in Ireland.
All the searches I have carried out has drawn blanks

I have relatives from roscommon area with the surname GILLOOLY, spelled different, but I would be interested in sharing information, to see if there is some connection. My great-grandmother was Bridget Mary Gillooly, born in 1894, Her father was named James Gillooly. Her mother was Mary Tierney, she remarried a man with the surname Dolan. I dont' know if this will be helpful, but I hope so! Jessica

thanks for your reply. Do you have details of James Gillooly's parents. His parents would be around the same age as Thomas Gilhooly who was born in 1848. I have looked at search site for Gillooly some of the christian names are in the family. As you say the spelling of names do vary and have been changed over the years. The name Dolan from Cavan goes back to the 1800's on Mary Barret's side (she was Thomas Gilhooly's wife married in Scotland). Look forward to your reply

Hi Carolyn, Unfortunately, I have no further information about James Gillooly. I have found a census record from 1901 of a James Gillooly, married to a Mary with a daughter named Bridget. However, there are others listed in the household and the family that is connected to mine only had 2 children; Bridget and John. I am not sure how to get much further. I have the Griffiths output from 1857-58, which lists Gillooly's and thier property. Let me know what you have! Thanks, Jessica

2nd attempt I lost the first reply.
Thanks for the quick reply. The only definite details I have about Thomas Gilhooly is date of marriage and death (1873 and 1919) in Scotland, and the names of his parents. I got this from a copy of his death certificate. But I can't find any details of his birth or his parents details. The only mention of a Thomas Gilhooly is from the griffiths and there are 3 Thomas and 1 James mentioned. But I do not know the date of this grifiths search. If you look on the familysearch.com you will find a list of gilhoolys or gillooly under the igis for Ireland. Let me know if this is help.

Hi Carolyn, I have the same griffith's information as you, it is from around 1857/58 if it's from co. Roscommon. I hope that this helps you! It looks like there is probably no link between our two Gillooly's. I have found some indication that my Gillooly's had been around Ireland at least by 1800. I would love it if you found more information that could be 'the missing link', Thank-you so much! Jessica

Just thought you would like to know that the 1901 census is available on the Leitrim/Roscommon homepage.

Jessica - coming on your information from a different direction. I have a Gillooley from Roscommon, who married a Mary and had 2 children that I know of, named Bridget and John. John was born in 1891, married Ellen King and they went to Brooklyn, New York - does this match with what you have? Tony
