Jacob Cole, Born Nova Scotia - Raised in Maine

Jacob Cole, Born Nova Scotia - Raised in Maine

Surnames: Cole, Crosby
Jacob (my gggrandfather) was born 1837-1841 in Nova Scotia, but was raised in Maine - possibly East Machias. He married Miranda Lowell Crosby and they had 6 children - Charles W., Lucy, Edward Alexander, Bertha, Laura Alice and George J. All of the children were born in Humboldt Co,. California, except their first child Charles.

I am trying to find Jacob's family, in particular who his parents might be. Any information concerning this line of Cole's would be very helpful. I can't seem to get any further along my line than Jacob!

Many Thanks.

Dear Dianna
Although I don`t presently know of any Jacob in my direct family line, I believe I can give you some insight as to likely general origins.
My Great Grandfather, Daniel Cole arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia (The Canadian eqivalent to Ellis Island) in 1838.
They were from the County of Cork in Ireland where, Cole is not an uncommon name.
They, like countless others were fleeing the ravages of the Irish famine. Nova Scotia being an entry point for all new immigrants to Canada was also a transient place at this time in history. As your family chose to move onwards to Maine, mine chose to pass through Quebec and settle the farm community of Strabane Ontario, near the Niagara escarpment (The cliffs of the Niagara penisula)
Whether we are distant cousins in name or blood, I wish you success as you reconstuct the journey.
Hope this brings something new to your search.
Sincerely
Lance Darren Cole

Dear Lance,

Thank you so much for the information. I had no idea that Halifax was similar to our Ellis Island. And to think that our Cole's might be from Ireland! There are so many from England I have been assuming that train of thought. Not any more! As I have searched for records on my Jacob, I have found many other Coles in that area! Unfortunately, I haven't been able to connect any of them with mine.

Your information helps tremendously, and I appreciate your willingness to share with me. Again, many thanks.

Your possible cousin,
Dianna

My ggg grandfather was also born in 1840 and his name was Absolam Cole. He died in 1865 from cancer. He may have had a brother William and now I am wondering about Jacob.... Do you know anything of Jacob' parents at all?
