I am interested in the parents/siblings of James William or William James Smith, abt 1845-1926. He was married to Lydia Anne "Biddy" Jones 1850-1932, and lived as a farmer in Trappe, Wicomico County, MD. They had approx 8 kids, 4 girls and 4 boys: Emily L, William L, Mary A, Sarah Jane "Jennie," (Townsend,) Ella M, John W, Henry James, Charles Ervin. As you can imagine, it is difficult to trace Smith/Jones! Any info is appreciated.

Did you ever find your James William Smith? I am researching Smiths in Trappe, Wicomico, MD. I just went through the Smiths on the 1850 census in Trappe, and your family was not in that census. Have you found them in any other census?

There is only one Smith family in that census in 1850 in that area that is not mine: William Smith, 28; Hetty, 30, Elenora, 8; George, 6; Francis, 4;Louella, 8 months. I am trying to see how they connect to my family, but so far, no luck.

Hi Joni,

No, I haven't found them.I have that census, too. There are so many Smiths in that area, and so far, JW doesn't seem to be any of them. His wife's name is Lydia Ann JONES,so that doesn't help at all! But let's keep in touch. Something's bound to come up!

William James Smith was the son of James Lewis Smith (b. abt 1809 in Trappe; d. aft 1880) and Sarah Ann Marshall (b. Jun 1817; d. Feb 10 1903). James and Sarah had other children:

Ann Smith (b. 1837)
Samuel Smith (b. 1840)
Mary Smith (b. 1841)
Lawrence Smith (b. 1844)
Louis Asbury Smith (b. Dec 1848)
Sarah Smith (b. abt 1850)
Albert F. Smith (b. Dec 20 1853; d. Mar 4 1936)
Thomas T. Smith (b. Apr 1856)
Perry McD. Smith (b. 1858)

I have found some scraps that suggest that James Lewis Smith's parents were James Smith (b. abt 1808; Wicomico Hundred, Somerset County, MD) and Levinah Jenkins Sirman (Surman/Sirma) - but there I've hit a dead end. I'd be grateful for any info anyone might have about them.

I have found that, too, with a few additional details re children which I hope are correct, in case you don't have them: Eliza Ann b. 1837, Mary L 1841-1868, Laurence Lurany as alternate names for Lawrence, Sarah Ellen 2 Mar 1848 in Trappe, Wicomico, Maryland d. 19 Apr 1925, and the rest are the same.

Also, that James Smith and Levinah Sirman were born before 1790 and she died in Trappe, which apparently includes Wicomico Hundred. Hope their parents will turn up!
