Surnames: McIntosh, McCuaig, Fraser
I would like to know more about my great great grandfather and his wife – their parents, were they married in Canada or Scotland and where are they buried.
I would also like to know about my great grandfather and his wife as well – I don’t know when or where they were married or when/where they died and were buried. I don’t know anything about Christina – her parents etc.
What I do know:
Niel McIntosh is my great great grandfather, he was born in 1781 in Scotland, immigrated to Canada (year unknown). He was married to Cathine or Catherine born 1797 in Scotland (I think that her maiden name is McCuaig as my grandfather lived/worked for his cousin/uncle Duncan McCuaig in Portage Manitoba and I can’t really find any other family connections with that name). I don’t know if they were married in Scotland or met in Glengarry area of Ontario but their first child Donald (my great grandfather) was born in Glengarry in 1831. Niel had a younger brother Kenneth (born in 1795 in Scotland) and lived with Niel and Cathine and continued to live with Cathine after Niel died in 1869. The 1871 census puts Kenneth and Cathine living with Donald McIntosh and his family in Lochiel township . I don’t know when Kenneth died, I could not find him in the census 1881.
My Great Grandfather Donald McIntosh was born in 1831 in Glengarry. He married Christina Fraser (born 1837 in Ontario – parents unknown) in 1861 or 1862 as their first child Christine was born in 1862. As far as I can tell, they had a number of children: Andrew 1864, Mary, 1866, Niel 1868, My grandfather John 1871 (and a possible last child Angus born in 1880). I am not sure when Donald and Christina died, but I heard that they died when my grandfather was about 14 years of age, and my grandfather left Ontario and worked for a cousin Duncan McCuaig in Manitoba)
I don’t really know what happened to any of my grandfather’s siblings either, I don’t have any records and I can’t find anything about them. I do have 2 pictures of men who I thought were my grandfather, until I looked at the date, a time when my grandfather was in Saskatchewan – the pictures were taken by a photographer in Alexandria Ontario – one of a single man and another of a man, wife and 4 children.

Thanks very much Tal
I had identified an agricultural index for Niel in 1852 in Lochiel but had not found that other record -
I had to allow the birth date to be flexible for Niel and then found the record

With further researching I found the family in the 1881 census in the District of Lambton and Subdistrict of Enniskillen. This area is north of Bowmanville, Ontario.
Donald age 50
Christina age 47
dau Christine 19
son Andrew 17
dau Mary 15
son Neil 13
son John 10
son Kenneth 7
son Duncan 4
son Angus 1

You will note two other children of Donald and Christina.
As far as I can figure out Neil and Catherine, parents of Donald, were on land around or near 15.6 Lochiel. (Lot 15 Concession 6)

My apologies folks but I had the incorrect area for Enniskillen Twp. It is in south western Ontario and the city of Sarnia is in the county of Lambton. The township of Enniskillen is SE of the city of Sarnia.

these very easily could be my relatives - I know that we were told that my grandfather John (son of Donald and grandson of Niel) and his siblings were born in Dalkeith.
I don't know about Rachel - but Niel could have been married before Catherine/Cathine, but we don't really have any information about that, it is all very sketchy - on how much older Niel was than Cathine, so the dates that I have have been 'guestimated' from a number of factors.
If the stone for Neil McIntosh it may mean that some descendants have been caring/paying for the updating so maybe we could get some information from them, if we can find out who they are?
If you live in the area, could you let me know who looks after the parish/cemetery and upkeep so I could investigate that lead.
Thanks so much for the help Anne

Hi Karen:
Rooting around I found 2 interesting birth registrations......
(1) Duncan Donald McIntosh born 17 Nov 1876 father-Donald McIntosh, Mother- Christy Fraser, address given as W 11.7 Lochiel.
(2) Christina Catherine McIntosh born 6 Sept 1877-father-John
McIntosh, Mother Christy McKinnon, address given as E 11.7 Lochiel.
I expect that John is a brother to your Donald. Both children were delivered by a Dr McIntosh.
In the 1881 census both men (Donald and John) had sons aged 13 named Niel.
I do know who works with the cemetery at St Columba but will not post the e-mail address on line here. Contact me at eaneuman@hotmail.com.
