Two Dead Ends

Posted: 21 Nov 2012 10:46PM GMT
Classification: Query
Surnames: Wintgens, Barkfke, Brogroski, Barkoef
I am looking for info on my grandmothers family. Her father's family was from Germany and her mother's family was from Ohio.

I have a lot of info but at the same time NO info! I will start with the German side.

Wilhemenia Wintgens b- 18 Nov 1853 Not sure what her maiden name was. All her kids marriage license have different spelling from Barkfke, von Barkoef, and (Von) Brogroski or Grogroski.

Married - Lambert Wintgens Also very little info. I have his naturalization paper from Perry Co, Ohio, dated 1 Nov 1895. Also, I found him in the 1900 Census living with a family as a boarder. Info from this: Birthplace Belgium, Birth - Apr 1844, Estimated marriage year - 1883, and immigrated - 1893. (Name on census Lambert L*Intgens) Cannot locate any other info. Not on any other census, no birth, marriage or death. The family he was living with on the 1900 Census was living in Athens Co, Ohio on the 1910 Census, he was not with them.

Children -

Pauline F. - 1881 married John C Friedinghaus
Adolf - 1879 Cannot locate any other info other than when he came to USA in 1894
Augusta - 1880 married Herman Theisan
Otto Alvis - 21 May 1883 married Julia (Flora) Emmaline Bigum
Gustave - 14 Dec 1884 married Jessie Pinkerton
Hugo I - 28 Sep 1886 married Fannie Davis
Frederika - 1890 Cannot locate any other info other than a census with her living as a waiter.

The first ship manifest I can find is with Wilhemenia bringing the children over from Germany. She also was bringing their neice, Maria Kapaunke. It also states that their last residence was Bruckhaus. (Bruckhausen?)

Second Dead End - Her mother's family Davis....

Fannie Davis - b-27 Oct 1891 married Hugo I Wintgens on 2 May 1908 Perry County Ohio, Father Levi Davis, from Jackson County Ohio, Mother Mary Alice Kirkendall

Thank you! I had some of this but not the marriage info on LJ. The only thing I had found was the dob on the 3 kids from a Jackson County Birth records book at our public library. But cannot find birth info on Levi or Mary. Also I think I have Levi's parents but am unsure on how to verify. This is only from following the census records and guessing on correct families as there are a few "Levi Davis". But judging by the approx dob I have Levi's parents as James Davis and Nancy A. from census 1870, 1880

Do you have a death date for Levi?

His death certificate MIGHT include his parents' names.

Likewise for Mary Alice...

I wondered about that! Because on the census the info on Fannie was correct but it was not her mother. I also saw on there that Levi and Clara was only married for 5 yrs and Fannie was 8! But still unsure about Levi's parents.

Thank you! I will use this info as a starting point for her death. I hadn't been able to find anything and with Levi being remarried on the 1900 census I wasn't sure when she died.

You can see Levi and Mary's marriage license here:

https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.3.1/TH-267-11711-32495-54?...

One tidbit from this: He was over twenty-one and she was over eighteen when they married (unless they lied :) )

There are other Mary Davises who died around the same time in Jackson County, Ohio, so also look at those at familysearch.org.

I chose this one since it seemed to fit the most.
