Hi,
Does anyone know how or where I can look to find records for military families stationed in British India during the 1870s-1880s? My gg grandparents from Lancashire had at least 6 "missing" children (I can find no records of them at all). My gg grandfather, Patrick McGrail (misnamed on military records as "McFreal"), was a foot soldier and was stationed in India during the 1870s and fought in Afghanistan with the Punjabs in 1880-81. My theory is that Patrick's wife Jane O'Rourke McGrail, might have lived in India with Patrick until he went to fight in Afghanistan, when she seems to have returned to Lancashire w/o him. As the 6 "missing" children all seem to have been born and died during the first decade of Patrick & Jane's marriage and he was in the British Army that period, perhaps all the children must have been born and died in India. Anyone know how I could find out? I saw no Indian records on Ancestry.com

Google India Office Library - they have a family history section. Also Families in British India Society (FIBIS).

You will also find information on your family through the www.familysearch.org website - which is run by the LDS (mormon's church of latter day saints). Great wealth of information of marriages, births and death records.

Good luck.

Hi , can I suggest you also try looking in the following site: 'The Asplin Military History Resource', as you may find some of your ancestors there.

Also try the British Library online newspaper archives. If any of your Mc Grail military men were officers there's a good chance that any births or marriages would be mentioned in the London newspapers at the time eg London Times or Gazette. the British Library gave me the enlistment details of my gggrandfather, by e-mail.

Cheers, Joan
