The surname Bettencourt,Betancourt is derive from Bethancourt, the name of a town located in the ancient province of Picardy, located in Northwest France. Thus the surname originated as a toponymic name to identify a person born in Bethancourt. The original beare of the surname was noe Josef de Bethancourt,Lord of Bethancourt and of Granville who married Maria de Bethancourt Florenville e Sedan around 1360.His son, also called Josef, was the discoverer of the Canary Islands. His grandson,Henrique and Maciot de Bethancourt, were Governors and Lords of the Canary Islands.A descendant of the above family,Gaspar de Bethancourt, established a branch of the family in Portugal, where he married Guimar de SA. They 1st settle in the island od Madeira. In Portugal the surname took the form Bettencourt. From Portugal branches of the family were established in a number of Spanish provinces where the surname too the form BETANCOURT.

My husband's grandmother was a Bethancourt, but in tracing her back, we have found that her gg-grandfather was Luis Betancur from the Canary Islands. Would this coincide with the information that you have?

Matias Betancourt came from Canary islands.
Descendant of Juan(Jean)Betancourt. Would like to know if this is a direct descendant?

Completamente equivocado

There is a book, "Nobiliario y Blazón de las Canarias", by Juan Fernández de Bethencourt, you can find there something. But, Juan de Bethencourt IV, was a man that lived arround XV century, and your grand, grand father, was from 400 years later, sorry for my english, is not very good.

There is
