I have a matilda j. cheek in my family lineage. She was born in 1836 in Tennessee and migrated to Dallas County Missouri. Married Lewis Layafette Stafford in 1852 in Dallas County. They had 8 children: James Henderson b. 1853 (who was my great grandfather), Sarah A., John Calvin, Lewis Henry, Cynthia Ann, Martha Elizabeth, Van Rachel(the 1880 Polk County Census says her name is Rachel V.), Robert W.(same census says William R.). Matilda and Lewis also had a grandson in the home and his name was Charles. All Children including the grandson were born in Missouri. The census shows James Henderson to be a widower, therefore, I am assuming that Charles was his son, which would make him my grandmothers half-brother. My grandmothers name was Florence Etta (Stafford) Power. James Henderson was her father and Mattie Polson was her mother. Florence Etta and Thomas Richard were the Parents of my Father Thomas Richard Power, Jr. b. 1924 in McDonald County, MO., Anderson TWP. I am searching for Matilda's parents. I have been told that her fathers name was Eli, and I have no name, as yet, for her mother. I am assuming that Mattie Polson Stafford was actually Samantha Polson as there is no Mattie listed in the census for the name of Mattie. She would have been 17 years old in 1881 when her father Martin Polson signed for her to marry James Henderson Stafford, since she was under the legal age of 18. Perhaps you have info concerning Eli Cheek or Hanna (maiden name unknown) Polson. Hope this has helped. If you have any information Lets Trade.
