I'm doing research on my Great-Great-Grandfather an African-American name George Terrell born 1840 in Mississippi married to Susan Terrell born ab 1855. I do not know which county so that makes it even harder to pinpoint my search. I know they migrated to Tyler Texas (Smith County) about 1867 and I have all the information on them from that time period foward.

What I need help on is information during their slave period in Mississippi. George father came from NC and mother from TN. I know there where some white and black Terrell in and about MS during that time frame. Any informations or leads great or small would be most greatly appreciated.

Linda: What you should do is check the 1850 MS census for any Terrells and then go into the 1850 Slave Schedules for those counties to see if any of those Terrells owned slaves. An 1850 schedule should show your ancestor at 10 years of age; that is, it may not name him specifically but will more than likely indicate the age grouping and gender of any slaves in that household. I can already tell you that for Amite Co., MS that James Elizabeth Terrell did not own slaves. Nor as far as I know did his younger brother Solomon Terrell. Any others I cannot vouch for. Hopefully that will give you a place to start. Then you may want to check the county records, such as wills probates, deeds (for deeds of gift) to see if by chance if your ancestor's owners died prior to the end of the Civil War if they were mentioned in any probate (which slaves sometimes were, if they were given over to children as part of their inheritance). I mention deeds of gift because prior to the death of the principal owner, he may have "gifted" the slave over to one of his children (avoiding probate in some respects). Hope it helps.
