`I am looking for the parents of William Welling, born in June or Jan 18, 1756. He is presumably from New Windsor, NY and went to Canada in the 1880's where he married Jamima Underhill and died in Pittstown, NY in 1838. Does anyone have information?

Hi Barbara I have more than a few Welling's from Little Britain. As for your inquiry John Welling was the first to settle here. He came from Long Island NY area before the Revolution and acquired the John Young homestead here on Toleman Rd. John married Mary Mullinder/Mulliner dau of Peter who was one of the early settlers to Little Britain, in fact coining its name. They had 8 children: Peter, William, John, Frederick, Isabella, Anna, Sarah and Mary. During the war the Wellings were reluctant to sign the Pledge of Association, seems their feelings had Loyalist tendencies. The family lost the homestead and went to Canada in the years following the Revolution they regained owner ship of the property. The Underhill family was also from the Little Britain area.

None of these William Wellings is the William that I am researching. I have buriel records for him and Jemima in Pittstown. However, this may be his father and family. Do you have more details? What do you know about birth/death records for the other siblings that you mention? If you want to email me directly, contact me at bdenno@comcast.net.

Hi Glenn,

Do you have any information on the Descendents of William Welling? We just learned a week ago a missing link in our tree (due to birth records missing in NB Archives for Shediac for the period) was William W. Welling whose father was William Welling from the USA this came from an 83 yr old cousin we just found Dorothy Welling out in New Brunswick.

Thanks
Dave

Dave: What are the dates of your William Wellings? I have identified three Williams in NB/Nova Scotia. William Welling from the US b. 1754 d.1838 and lived in Carleton. His son William T. Welling b. 1793, and William Welling, the son of John Welling in Shediac. I do not have dates for him, buthe was a contemporary of the William b 1754. As far as I can tell, William T. Welling also stayed in Canada, but I do not have any other information on him. Do you?

This may be a long shot but it seems as if you know quite a bit about the Welling family in the USA. I am related to Hannah Welling who was born about 1760 in Warick, Orange Co, NY. Her father's name was Thomas Welling. Hannah married John Brunson and had 9 children with him. That is all I know. Would you happen to have any information on this Welling family? Sincerely yours, Gail Wittich

Town of Warwick

This town was erected from Goshen in 1788, and took its name from the village of Warwick.
The region of country extending from north of the village of Warwick to Bellvale, was among the earliest settled portion of the town, and while the Indians were still in possession of the banks of its streams and forests. In 1746 Daniel Burt, the father of the Hon. James Burt of this town, came from Connecticut and located upon the farm now owned by Thomas and Edward L. Welling, Esq'rs.- There he remained in the depths of the forest for four years, when his relatives came from Connecticut and after a long and tedious search found him buried in the wild woods.- They assured him he could never get along in such a new country, and persuaded him to return with them, which he did. He sold out to Thomas Welling the grand father of Thomas and Edward L. Welling, and moved back to Connecticut. There he was not satisfied to remain, returned in 1760, and made an effort to re-purchase his old farm of Mr. Welling, but in consequence of a disagreement about the price of a horse, which was to be a part of the consideration, the bargain fell through, and Burt purchased at Bellvale, on Long House Creek. This was a valuable property, as it contained a fine water power upon which he erected a flour and saw mill. The mill was overshot, there being 30 feet fall in 30 rods. Extensive milling and other mechanical works have continued to be conducted there. This location his son Mr. James Burt exchanged for the farm on which he now lives, near the village of Warwick, and the one owned by the Magees, containing 300 or 400 acres. On the Welling farm there was an Indian settlement called Mistucky. They had an orchard of apple trees, some of which were standing till within a few years since, in a meadow.

I have quite a bit of information on the Welling family. Thomas (the one you mention born 1724 in Newtown Queens and died in Warwick, Orange County, New York on 4/29/1796), was married to Hannah Edsall and they had six children: Elizabeth (b. 1750) [ Mrs. John Hathorn], Thomas, Richard, John, [Mrs. John Wheeler}, and Hannah [Mrs. Bronson]. I have the information on the sixth daughter, but have misplaced it right now. I am pretty sure that Thomas was the son of William Welling I have more information that I would be glad to share. Please send me an email and maybe we can collaborate.
