FTM 2009 - places

Hi
I've been trying - and failing - to decouple myself from relying upon Ancestry.com. After a try using Roots I ended up with FTM - it remains a struggle.

Having downloaded my GED I am like anyone faced with a 100's of people I've traced through census and have input facts but - like with the on line - want to view the census entry as media. Of course GED doesn't hold that so thats likely to be 1000's of census entries I need to 'rediscover' ie: the 'Smith' who was 'Smyth' or even Cmith' you get point. A huge task.

I've tried to rationlise my places alas I've put through my on line stuff a census entry as - residence...putting full postal in the 'location' and occupation in description. Of course in FTM 2009 that means I impored over 1000 'errors' with all to be 'resolved'. But I can't move the pin in FTM. So I can't say its 'resolved' I'm forced to turn the full postal into a 'manchester, lancashire' location and put the postal in the descitpion which clashes with occupation.

On line Ancestry DO allow moving the places pin to an exact spot.

Why am I moaning ? Cos I'm likely to resign myself very soon to paying £90 a year to keep using Ancestry.com and abandon off line. It seems too late to change without starting a fresh and entering all the data from scratch. ie: bye bye liufe for 6 months. If only I'd know the right protocols to adopy on day 1. sigh.

J

I'm a little confused here...you say that there is a problem by putting the postal code and perhaps street address into the Description field of residence? How would that possibly interfere with the Occupation field, which is a separate field completely?

Also, I have never tried dragging pins around, but it seems horribly inefficient. There is a Places tab across the top of the FTM 2009 interface that will allow you to resolve your places much more easily and quickly.

???Hmm indeed. lets try again. No postcodes.

My Ancestry.com and thus GED has the 'census' entry as 'residence' . In the 'location' field of said fact I put the full address from the census where givem ie: 6 Wood Lane, Hyde, Cheshire. Now in the desciption I decided to place the occupation. My choice. My fault. Of course the alternative was to have a seperate fact for census, residence, occupation etc. For each person, each census I felt that was blurring and inefficient. As it is most of my lot do shift jobs so having occupation tied to each census year makes sense.

Of course in FTM all above are now unresolved as FTM can't find '6 wood lane' and of course they've not designed it so that I can move the pin to where the address or street is.

Thats accuarcy not horrible inefficiency!? Otherwise said person 'place' is given as 'Hyde' which is of little use.

Jon,

Since you already have a thread of messages going on the full address issue, I'll not try to address that here, I'll look for a reply from my last reply to you.

Yes, Census Records, on import into 2009 is Residence. I thought about that issue for quite a while. But, let's think about it a moment. Isn't a Census Record, an indication of the Residence of where there individual was in that census year. I accepted that change, as I had entered Census as a FACT. The Census then, is a Source-Citation, right?

After getting of the Change in how I was recording my census information, I cleaned up my file.

Just a thought.

Totally agree and sorry to have 2 posts running ! the query evolved as I ate lunch !

I am happy with residence. I agree census is source citation. I just kinda wish I didn't have to have to start developing a seperate fact for each occupation at each census.Again its an issue of going back to start. I also don't like that when I do the FTM thing(ie: place is say manchester and use description field for say '8 Wood end Lane, Hyde , Manchester') it is viewable as a fact but says 'manchester, lancashire/ 8 wood end lane, hyde.' Which looks odd.

Doesn't FTM 2009 automatically extract all of the facts appropriately from Census merges (i.e., not via GEDCOM)?

Of course.

But I've imported a 1,189 person GED from Ancestry.com into FTM and of course the census images aka any media do not come with the GED.

So thats probably 3000+ census merges to be able to adequately extract myself and close account my Ancestry.com account.

Neat marketing trick !

Jon,

Why are you developing a separate Occupation for each Census?

There is an Occupation FACT. Enter the Occupation in the Description field. Oh, since your Source-Citation is a Census Record, you also have the Location (Place) where that occupation is reported. Then, use the Census Record as the Source-Citation for the Occupation FACT.

You might like seeing how that shows up is a Place Report.

I will reply on the Location issue Separately.

Daniel,

No, but information from a Census Record is imported into your Family File. It depends on which Census Record you are looking at, will determine what fields are populated (with the Users options).

Jon,

If you have read this message board, you will see that others have had the same problem. It depends on where you started and updated your tree. You started at Ancestry.com and have that problem. I started from the Family Tree Maker program. I don't have that problem.

I have uploaded a tree to Ancestry and all of my Source-Citations and Images are online.

For this issue: I would suggest that you use this link:

http://ftm.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/ftm.cfg/php/enduser/ask_feed...

And provide some detailed feedback to Family Tree Maker 2009.

You will probably not receive feedback from them, but the developers do read the feedback.

Good luck,

Russ
