Seigle is such an unusual name, My husband's ancestor, Seigle Elza Cox was born13 Jan. 1862 in Brooklyn, Schuyler Co., Ill. His parents were William Cox born 28 Dec. 1827 in Morgan County Ohio.and Adelia Brooks, William's father was Jarrett Cox born in 1796 in Maryland. Do think there could be a connection? I thought my husband had the only ancestor named Seigle! I have birth, death, marriage, children etc. information on this family. I would be happy to share. I have been looking for the parents of Jarrett born in Maryland. Anyone help me with that?

Thank you for your response, Betty.

This COX line is my most stubborn roadblock.

I have unconfirmed information that "Sig" Cox was born in Mercer Co., MO in 1863, and believe his parents were John M. Cox (b. 1835 in IL, IN or OH) and mother Mary A. (b. 1833 in IN).

Unfortunately the Mercer Co., MO courthouse burned in 1898 and confirming that MO connection is proving quite difficult.

Since my initial posting I have found these families in KS (1890-95) and then in 1896 they arrived in Garfield Co., CO, where we know that "Sig" & his 2nd wife Alice died many years later. I suspect that John M. & Mary A. also died in Garfield Co., CO (yet unconfirmed).

I see on the IL county map that your Schuyler Co., IL is not all that far from my Mercer Co., MO folks. So we MIGHT find a link with some more digging.

Also, "Sig" married his 2nd wife, Alice, in 1890 Rawlins Co., KS. It appears that Alice may have been married to another COX before her marriage to "Sig" ... another clue I haven't yet confirmed. Info we have is that Alice's maiden name was "Dyher".

It is POSSIBLE that we may find some connections with your MD folk in that other lines of my family are from the Eastern seaboard ... Nantucket Island, MA .... the Gardner, Coffin, Macy & Starbuck lines, which I believe also included some Cox families.

If you have any connections to those Gardner, Coffin, Macy, or Starbuck lines, we probably should look into sharing some information at some future date. But at this time I still have too little info on my Cox line to generate much excitement.

Also, if any of your Cox line was in Garfield Co., CO in the later 1890s, we also might have another connection.

Please keep my name in your mailing list so we can share info later if we find a connection. I will add your name to my contact list also.

Thanks for your response.

Have found marriage info for Sig & Alice Cox in 1890 Rawlins Co., KS.

In 1895 Rawlins Co. KS State Census have found Sig/Alice & family, John M. & Mary A. Cox (possibly Sig's parents); Cinda (Sarah Lucynda Cox) Smith and husband William Orville Smith; and another family with Francis Bacon Gardner, wife N.J. (Nancy? Cox)

By 1896 Sig/Alice, John/Mary & Cinda/William had all located to Garfield Co., CO.

I now have an affidavit of birth, and a death certificate for Sarah Lucynda Cox Smith Gardner which indicates she was born in Princeton, Mercer Co., MO in 1877. Her 1st husband William Orville Smith was supposedly also born in Princeton, Mercer Co., MO in 1873.

Sarah Lucynda Cox' parents were supposedly John A. Cox and Sarah L. Vandegriff - both born in MO.

No other information is yet known on the relationship of John A. and John M. Cox; nor on the parents of William Orville Smith.

I cannot find any of these people around Mercer Co., MO in the 1850s-1890s.

Anxious to hear from anyone who has information on these lines for COX, SMITH, or GARDNER.

Thanks -
