Does anyone know if Nancy was a nickname for Mary Ann? If so, it would solve a mystery for me.

Nancy was a common nickname for Ann, Anne, Anna, etc. So it's quite possible that your Mary Ann was known as "Nancy."

Actually, the name Nancy arose as a nickname for Agnes, but that is long forgotten by most. It became a name in its own right and was not usually used as a nickname for anything else in North America.
