I am looking for information about John and Martha Bumgarner who left NC for Oklahoma, probably about 1890-1900 with their family,Linda? Edd, Bertha, Eva, Grace, Fay, Pearl and Constance. Eva married Delmer Shay in Kansas, Grace married John Surguy, I heard that Constance lived in California. Any information will be appreciated! I cannot locate them either in Kansas or Oklahoma.
I have a bunch of Bumgarners on the Leander Monroe Bumgarner side that originally lived in Wilksboro, Wilkes, NC and their descendants ended up in New Basil, KS. Could there be a connection?
I'M FROM NORTHWILKESBORO N.C. If I can be of any help please let me know. My greatgrandfather was Percy Bumgarner from the Millers creek part of Wilkes county N.C.
She was born 1806 in Lincoln Co NC and married Alfred Martin born 1802 Lincoln Co NC - looking for parents of both
Catherine Bumgarner's parents
Try the following: Andrew Nancy Bandy Bumgarner,
Moses and Charity Ickard Bumgarner, John and Katrine
Ward Bumgarner, Thomas Bumgarner m. unknown, Absolom and
Catherine Bumgarner, Melcher and Mary Ann Troutman
Bumgarner. All in the Lincoln County area before
it became Alexander County. You might need the children
of these folks. The only one I have is Amon Bumgarner
who married Sara Miller in 1795. His father was Thomas Bumgarner.
I too am looking for information about Amon Bumgarner and family. He is the father of Alfred Aaron Bumgarner, father of John B. Bumgarner, father of Eva Estelle Bumgarner, my grandmother. I just found Alfred, 26, wife Catherine, 19 and son Amon, 1 yr, in a small published 1850 Alexander Co. Census. It also gives his mother Sarah,55 alone with children, Andrew,25, Catherine,22, Sarah,19 Davidson,16, Munroe,14, and John 4yrs. I also got dates for John B. Bumgarner, wife Martha Laws, and family from a cousin who has the family bible. John and Martha are buried in Ark. My grandmother, Eva Estelle, went to Martha's furneral with her sister Lela Grace Bumgarner Surguy. They, Eva and Grace, are both buried in Humble, Tx. I have pictures of their graves. Looking forward to hearing from cousins.

In Andrew Monroe Bumgarner's autogiography
written 1916-1922 he writes numerous poems
at the end of this autobiography, one of
which is a two-page poem,
"Memories of my Brother John" and says the
poem was "written in memory of my brother John
who died in Oklahoma in 1914." Andrew was
two years older than John. Many of the
researchers who are descendents of Alfred
have copies of this book. It is also in
the library at Taylorsville, NC.
In addition, I have a copy of the Family
Group Sheet of John Bryan Bumgarner compiled
by Jean Surguy, dau. of Grace Lelier Bumgarner
Surguy. One of her sources was "Mom Surguy's
Bible" in addition to the death certificate
in Oklahoma of John Bryon Bumgarner.
I was told some years ago at a family reunion
in Taylorsville that Martha Laws Bumgarner
returned to Alexander Co. and that she is
buried there. I cannot confirm that. I do
know that three of her sons Lindsay C.,
John Bernerd, and Ernest Edgar are buried
in Alex. Co. NC at Lebanon Baptist Church
I hope the above will be helpful in your
Thanks for the information. I'll have to check out the burial spot for John and Martha Bumgarner, and contact the Surguys. I knew tham well as a child. I remember when Grandmother and Aunt Grace left for Martha's funeral. I also met Linsay when he visited my grandparents in Houston, Tx.
Do you know if it is possible to obtain a copy of Andrew Monroe's autobiography? John Bryan was my gr-grandfather.
I plan to go to Tayorsville in the fall.
I borrowed a copy of Uncle Andrew's
autobiography from a relative
years ago and copied it. It is 118 pages.
If you plan to be in Taylorsville in the
fall try to get by the library as I am
sure there is a copy there.
It is "Autobiography of Andrew Monroe
Bumgarner or The Little Book." You may
be able to copy it there. The Bumgarner
reunion is held every year on the Sat.
of the second weekend in October at
Lebanon Baptist Church. Try to arrange
your visit then. We take a covered dish
and eat around noon.
John Byan was my Gr.Grandfather, I am the son of Edgar Earnest Bumgarner and Relda Wave Swaney. For more information, my sister Josephene Bumgarner Watts can be contacted by firstname.lastname@example.org
