Am searching for the parents or siblings of William COOEY born 1796 in Laurens County, Georgia. He married Nancy MALLOY about 1814 (probably in Laurens Co.) and had at least two children. The children are

Lucinda COOEY born 1815 in Laurens County, Georgia
James Madison COOEY born 1822 in Laurens County, Georgia

Lucinda COOEY married Alexander YOUNG about 1835 and moved to Madison County, Florida about 1849. Lucinda, her husband Alexander and brother James Madison COOEY are all buried in OId Columbia Cemetery just north of the Florida-Georgia border in Nankin, Brooks County, Georgia. There are several COOEY's in that Graveyard as if other members of the COOEY family moved to that area. The earliest dates were 1852 for these COOEYs.

Surnames: COOEY, MORRISON, WARD, HEWETT
I am also researching the Cooey line but as far as I know, my Cooey's were in Holmes/Walton County Florida which might be close to Madison Florida (but I'm not sure). Do you know the names of the other Cooey's in the cemetary you mentioned? I too am looking for a William Cooey but he was born about 1805. That is my oldest known ancestor. Maybe the names of persons in that cemetary may be related and can shed some light on who or how our lines may be connected.
Thank you

Hi Despina

The COOEYs buried in the Brooks County Georgia cemetery all appear to be descendants of William COOEY (1796-?) and Nancy MALLOY of Laurens County, Georgia. I believe that William had at least three children who I believe were born in Laurens County, Georgia

Lucinda Christchan COOEY (1815-1872)
James Madison COOEY (1822-1901)
Elmira COOEY (abt 1824-?)

Lucinda Christchan COOEY is my Great Great Grandmother. She married Alexander YOUNG about 1835 probably in Laurens County, Georgia. They had 6 children in Georgia before moving to Madison County where they had 3 more.

James Madison COOEY married Elizabeth HENDERSON (1832-1907) probably in Georgia and moved to Brooks County Georgia about 1879.

James Madison COOEY and Elizabeth HENDERSON had the following children all in Georgia

William H. COOEY (1850-?)
Edward Michael COOEY (1852-1914)
Thomas COOEY (1859-?)
Barbara COOEY (1859-1945)
John M. COOEY (1865-?)
Rebecca COOEY (1878-?)
J. COOEY (1878-?)

I do not have any additional information about Elmira COOEY (1824-?)

The COOEYs who are buried in the Old Columbia Cemetery at Nankin, Brooks County, Georgia are descendants of William COOEY (1796-?). The following individuals are buried there. I am not sure is this is a complete listing.

Lucinda Chrsitchan COOEY (1815-1872) and Alexander YOUNG (1802-1867)
James Madison COOEY (1822-1901) and Elizabeth HENDERSON (1832-1907)
Edward Michael COOEY (1852-1914) and Mattie KING (1858-1935)
Wilson James COOEY (1896-1938) son of Edward Michael COOEY and Mattie KING

One of James Maidson COOEY daughters and her husband are buried at Oakridge Cemetery in Madison County, Florida.

Barbara COOEY (1859-1945) and James ONEAL (1866-1930)

Nankin, Brooks County Georgia is only a few miles from the Georgia-Florida border and Madison County, Florida so even though parts of this family lived in different counties and states, the were probably no more that 10 to 20 miles apart. Madison County is about 40-50 miles east of Tallahassee and just south of Valdosta, Georgia. That would make it about 150 east of Holmes or Walton County, Florida.

COOEY is a very unusual name so they are hard to find but if you find one they are probably related to others in the area. I have some more information on the children of some of this line and will send it to you by e-mail.

I hope this was helpful

Hi Makenzy

Your grand father was probably born about 1940. The William Cooey that I am looking for was born in 1796 or about 140 years earlier. That is about 6 or 7 generations earlier. We could be related but we would have to know more about your great grand father and your great great grand father and your great great great grandfather to know for sure.

I am about the age of your grand father. I was born in 1942.

If you find out more about your grand parents let me know and we can find out how we are related. The William COOEY that I was looking for is my 3rd great grand father. He only had one son that I know of, James Madison COUEY who was born in 1822 in Laurens County, Georgia and died in 1901 at Nankin, Brooks County, Georgia.

James COUEY and his wife Elizabeth HENDERSON had four sons

William H. COUEY born 1850 at Quitman, Brooks County, Ga.
Edward M. COUEY born 1852 at Quitman, Brooks County, Ga.
Thomas COUEY born 1859 at Quitman, Brooks County, Ga.
John M. COUEY born 1865 at Quitman, Brooks County, Ga.

If we are lucky one of those is one of your grand parents.
