Dear June, Our Great Grandfather was the son of George W. Fail born abt 1817 in Ohio and Mary Martin born abt 1824 in Indiana. I found Nicholas on an 1870 census for Schuyler Co. He was 8 years old then, so his birthyear has to be 1862. I also found Lucetta as a year old with her family. Her father was Jerimiah Gray and her mother was Nancy Reynolds. That is about all I have managed over the years, but I have started looking again. Hope to see you at the reunion if I get to come, I may have to work. I will bring my stuff. Donna

Message: I just saw your question and read today about a George W. Fail. There is a history of Oliver Wilson Fail in a book called Kansas and Kansans, Vol. 5. It mentions that Mr. Oliver W. Fail represents some old and prominent stock. His paternal ancestors were origionally from Germany but settled in Virginia in early colonial days. His great-grandfather, John Fail, was born in Virginia in 1774, and was one of the early pioneer settlers of Lawrence Co. Illinois, where he followed his vocation as a farmer until he died in 1849. This ancestor was a soldier in the War of 1812. George W. Fail, was the grandfather to the afore mentioned O. W. Fail, and was born in Lawrence Co. Ill. in 1816. He was reared in his native county and at Keokuk, Iowa, and spent many years as a farmer in Davis Co. Iowa, and shortly before his death removed to Schuyler Co., Miss. where he died in 1891. He was one of the early California gold seekers, having gone ther in 1852. He spent 7 yrs in the west, and was a bit more successful that the average gold seeker. He spent the rest of his life time as a farmer. He was a member of the Christian Church. George W. married Nancy Agnes Orr born in Lawrence Co. Ill. in 1820, and she died in Hamilton Ill. in 1856. Children: John died in childhood in Lawrence Co. Sarah, died young, Phoebe, died at the age of 3 yrs. William, died at 2 1/2, Samuel W. (father of Oliver W. Fail), born in Keokuk, Iowa, June 1, 1844. (more of his history in the book mentioned above.) George W. married a second time... Mary Woods, who was from Davis Co. Iowa. She gave birth to one child, Nicholas, who was a car worker and died in Colorado in 1910. This gave me some good ideas as my family is through Henry Jackson Fail in Ill. and Ind. maybe it can help you. Good luck!
