Hi Walter,
My name is Jayne Douglas and my Grandfathers mother was Josephine Garrecht from Offenbach. I am just starting to do the Garrecht family genealogy and only have a few names. I know Josephine's sister's name was Appolionia and she married Theobald Brucker. Appolionia's father was Georg-Jakob Garrecht, don't know who her mother was. Her birth place was Offenbach, Landau, Pfalz, 1780. Not sure when Josephine came to this country but she married Charles Mann on Sept 29, 1881, in Idaho City, Idaho. Any information would be appreciated if your in this line. I have letters written from the family dated 1888-1923 a couple have been interperated but the rest are all in German and I can't read them.
Thanks, Jayne

I have a Georg Jakob Garrecht in my family tree, he was my 5th great grandfather, and was born about 1746 in Offenbach. He married Catharina Wagner on Jan 26, 1773 in Offenbach. So far I only have one child listed for them, Joseph Garrecht born about 1781in Offenbach, he died about 1840 in Russia, and married Barbara Uhl. Georg's parents were Andreas and Anna Maria (Hoffner) Garrecht. If any of this fits in your family tree and you would like to exchange info please contact me at Hitchheick@aol.com

Jayne,

Let me know if you still need info on your George Jacobi Garrecht--Appolonia's father. I have a lot of info from the Offenbach area, as my ancestors are Garrecht, Wagner, and several other surnames from this same area.

Hi Mary,
Thank you for the reply. I am not sure if we are the same Garrecht line but really hope so. My ggrandmother was Josephine Garrecht b.1848, Offenbach, Pfalz, Bayern, Germany. She came to the US in 1875. I have a letter from her sister dated 3 mar 1921 dear sister, saw hello to Jakob, Elizabeth from your aunt Apollonia Garrecht.Mentions Margarete who is 80 years old. One dated 10 Apr.1926 dear cousin Therese (Josephine's daughter) signed your cousin Lorenz. One dated 24 mar. 1880 Dear Josephine signed your brothers & sisters M. Rosalie. The relatives are:Josephine-sisters Apollonia, Margarete, brothers Phillippe, sons of Phillippe are Georg and Daniel. Also mentioned are Elizabeth (sister of Josephine) and Jakob (brother of Josephine). Josephine lived in Idaho City, Idaho and married Charles Mann. I do find Elizabeth Garrecht and Jakob in the census in Idaho. My mystery is who their parents were??? I am not sure if it was George Jacobi or not. Any help would so much be appreciated.

Sorry I haven't replied before now--holiday's and everything!

My Garrecht's are mostly from the 1700's. I don't think I have any that would fit into your timeline.

But maybe if you had birth dates or "about" birth years for Josephine's family and the names mentioned in your query, I might have better luck. My Georg Jacob Garrecht was born 24 Mar 1746 in Offenbach, if that is any help time-wise.

Let me know.

Mary

I was so happy to hear back from you. I think we do have a connection but it may take a little work. My ggrandmother Josephine was born in 1848 in Offenbach. I have letters dated 1921, 1927, 1923,1880, 1926. In these letters they mention Josephine's sisters Margaretham Garrecht born 1841, married Henricum Theobaldum Braun. Appolonia Garrecht,Elizabeth and brothers Phillippe, Lorenz, & Jakob.Josephine, Elizabeth, Jakob, and Lorenz came to the US. I have the 1880 census Idaho, Boise Roll 173 that shows Josephine (sister-in-law) living with Elizabeth and her husband John, (who is also a Garrecht no relation). I have Idaho City news talking about the family. Also relatives Haug, Lippincott, Smith. Lots of info and pictures if we could only connect. Where do your Garrechts live that came to the US? Mine were pioneers in Idaho City area. Please get back with me. Thanks Jayne

Jayne,

My 3rd GR grandmother, Maria Catharina GARRECHT, christened 21 Sep 1785 in Lingenfeld, near Offenbach, married Elia RHEUDE in Lingenfeld. That is the end of my direct Garrecht line. Their son, Philippus Anton Rheude (one of 13 children) came to the U.S. around 1848. He took out his intent for citizenship in March of 1848 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and got his citizenship 15 Aug 1850, also in Milwaukee. That is where they married in Oct 1849. His parents both died in Lingenfeld, Germany.

So I don't have any direct ancestors in the U.S. with the surname Garrecht. But having counsins is great!

Have you come across the RHEUDE surname in any of your research?

I just looked at my Family Group Records and have some BRAUN's, also. Most were born in Lingenfeld. The latest ones I have (years closest to now) are the children on Joannem Jacobus Braun, born 1785, and Philippinam KILJAN (or Kilian; the J's and I's are often used as one and the same). They had 5 children: Maria Catharina, born 1810; Valentine, born 1811; Georg Jacob, born 1816; Anton, born 1819; and Johann Udalrius, born 1822.

I'm not sure how far back you've gone on your surnames from the Offenbach and Lingenfeld area. The other surnames you mentioned are not in my family history, so don't connect on any of them (Haus, Lippincott). Schmitt (Smith)--I have many from this area.

Let me know what you come up with. I'll be happy to share whatever information I have that you might need.

Mary

Darn I was hoping we could connect. Maybe there are lots of Garrecht's from Offenbach and surrounding but I have never been able to connect my US Garrechts with those from Baveria even though I know where they came from and some of their names too bad huh? I keep hoping a Garrecht will look at the Genforum and say wooo I know who they are...ha ha. You know us Genealoligist types we never give up.

Sorry we couldn't make a match now. But I bet there is a connection, seeing our Garrects are from the same towns. Just have to work backwards from what you know. Have you looked in the Offenbach microfilms at the Family History Library? I'm not sure where you live, but there are branchs all over the U.S. I'll let you know more about them, if you are interested. I have microfilm numbers from where I extracted the information. Or go to familysearch.org, click on Library Catalog, then type in the name of the town you are looking for, and you can choose what types of records you want--the Church records are the best. I believe the Garrects were found in the Catholic records. Let me know if you need some help. I'm by the Santa Monica (Los Angeles) Family History Library and I know the microfilms are already in that library.

You are right--we never give up!! I've been searching over 20 years for some of my family names and just can't seem to give up completely.
