Can any Genges out there help? I have traced my family back to John Genge of Axmouth, Devon, will proved 15/8/1796. He married Molly Cox 5/1/1773 (January) at Whitchurch Canonicorum Dorset. I would like to know where he was born and his parents??

Geoff,

I've been doing some work to trace the family tree( I live in England.

At the moment I have 4 generations of my part of the Genge family, but have yet to get the link to the Genges from Stoke-sub-Hamdon.

I paid a trip to Stoke-sub-Hamdon last friday to look at the church records and graveyard.

The strange thing was that the church doesn't have a graveyard, I nearly stopped someone to ask where they bury their dead!

If you want any of my info please let me know.

Regards

Martin Genge, Thanks for the reply. Where do they bury their dead!!
Would appreciate knowing your family branch. I have a lot of branches in my files that do not connect to me as yet. There is another family of Genge who descend from Genge of Norton S. Ham.here in NZ and Aust. which I have not yet connected into, they descend from William and Mary nee Slade, mar. 1829.
Look forward to hearing from you again

Geoff,

There may be some confusion over Stoke and Norton since they are side by side. Norton has got a church, a very old church with a graveyard. The tombstones are so old the writing is illegible.

Just be wary that the records may treat stoke and norton-sub-hamdon as the same place.

Like Martin Genge I also went to Norton-sub-Hamden and Stoke-sub Hamden searching for the Genges. I met some very nice and helpful people. I have attached a photo of the register from (The Blessed Virgin Mary ) church in Norton ,with many Genges listed. My wife is a decendant of John Genge (1829) and Sarah Wakely(1832).

I trust the following information will assist you.
Several volumes decribing the Gange/Genge families were published after more than thirty years of research. These have been deposited in a number of libraries and Record Offices in England and throughout the world.

Yours very truly,
