I just started researching my family surname - unfortunately both my parents are deceased. My dad (Abelardo Higareda - born 1913) had one brother named Jose (born 1923 ro 1927) and was raised in Uruapan Michoacan. I don't know anything about my dad's parents since they were dead before I was born. I've attached a picture of my father. Any information about the Higareda clan is greately appreciated and I will share any futhure information that comes my way. Gracias.

Hi Angel

I was wondering if you found out anymore information on the HIGAREDA name. I understand that the Higareda name is very popular in Mexico. My father is Jose Alberto. His father is Jose Maria.

Just curious.

Thank you

Hello Cindy, I have not found out anything more about the Higareda surname unfortunately. However, there is going to be a seminar on doing geneology research on Hispanic surnames in September in the city where I live. I will plan to attend and see if I can find out other research tools that might help in learning more about the Higaredas in Mexico. Thanks, Angel.

Hi Angel,
My name is Clotilde Higareda (aka Maria). I was born in Sahuayo Michoacan in april of 1975. My mother, whom I was named after. Died about 31 days after my birth. Shortly after her death my siblings (2 sis & 2 bros) and I were brought to the united states by my mothers sibling's (The Villasenor's). My father Enrique Chavez Higareda was later introduce to us. My story is long so I'll try to sum this up by saying my father has never been able to discuss much of our family history without getting emotional so we never pushed, and the only history we got from my mother's side isn't very helpful. So I ask that if you could please share with me any information on "Our Surname" reseach, it would be greatly appreciated, not to mention interisting to see how we may be related.

Hola Maria,

Thank you for your posting. I will certainly share anything I know about the Higareda surname.

First, let me congratulate you on learning about your family history - even though it may be difficult to obtain information from immediate family members. My partents, too, seldomly discussed family ties and I wasn't as interested when I was younger to find out anything more that what was offered.

On to the Higaredas in Sahuayo...I have come up with 104 Higaredas directly born in Sahuayo de Diaz, Michoacan from 1741 to 1888. The earliest Higareda to show up in Sahuayo was in 1741 that's 266 years ago!). This was Juan Miguel de Ygareda, who married one Gertrudis del Rio in 1761. Juan Migual and Gertrudis had atleast one son - named Juan Rosalia Ygareda who was born on March 25, 1761.

The first Chavez Higareda that I found was a Maria Josefa Chavez (born 1810) who married in 1827 to a Jose Antonio Higareda (also born 1810); however they seem to have come from Queretaro.

The Higareda surname comes from Spain...the first instance I came across is for a Magdalena de Iguereta Marechalar born in 1590 in a town called Lesaca, Navarra. Madalena married Augstin de Marechalar in July 20, 1608. After Navarra, the next generation of Higaredas appears in Vizcaya, Spain.

The first Higareda in Mexico seems to be a Juliana de Ygareda born in 1720 in a town called Jacona de Plancarte, Michoacan.

The Higaredas have been married with Alcaraz, Amescua, Arteago, Avalos, Buenrrostro, Cardenas, Castillo, Chavez, Colmenares, Comparan, Espinosa, Flores, Fregoso, Gallegos, Galves, Garza, Gonzalez, Gutierres, Hernandez, Moreno, Nunez, Ochoa, Perez, Ramires, Rodriguez, Rojas, Sanchez, Santana, Segura, Serrano, Uribe, Urtado, Valencia, Vega, Verrospe, Villasenor, Vitor, Ybarra, Yzaguirre, Zamora, Zepeda and many more.

I hope this answers some of your questions... I'm sure that you will have many more now. Good luck with your search. Angel.

Hi, I'm a Higareda. My father (who is still living) is a Higareda born and raised in Sahuayo, Michoacan (my oldest sister was also born there). There generation seems to be dying off though. My uncle Clemente and Federico past away not that long ago. I too can say the same about my father not discussing his childhood with us. My grandma (Maria) past away when he was very young and my grandfather (Clemente) worked in the USA on the railroads. So my father was raised by an aunt or cousin or something. Anyways, my father is the youngest of many brothers and sisters (Clemente, Federico, Felipe, Kiko, Theresa, Jesusita) thats all that I can think of right now. I'm very curious about my ancestors, so please keep me up to date. Feel free to contact me.

Thank you for posting your message. It is interesting how certain families have similar experiences. At times, I wish that I could have asked my parents more questions about our family tree and been more interested in learning about our family history. Now, it seems that a vital link is missing and we are left wondering how to re-create the past. Thanks again for your reply. I'm slowing researching some more and will post another message when I have something to contribute. Thanks, Angel.

Dear Angel,

This is regarding Paco,s e-mail. I, Sandra, Paco's wife am writing in be-half of Paco.( translating the history)

Regarding my grandfather Jose Higareda. His full name is Jose Higareda Ezqueda. His father was named Antonio Higareda.Antonio sold Birria in Saguayo. (goat meat). Jose, My grandfather at present lives in Jacona Michoacan. He's roughly in his 90's. I'd like to give you a physical discription of Jose. He's a Tall man. When he was in his prime years he was a little over 6ft. Tall. He has greenish color eyes. He has 1 daughter Carmen and 6 sons. There names are: Jose, Adam, Jesus, Salvador,Francisco(Pancho) ,& Louis. My grandfather had one brother named Mariano who was a police officer in Mexico City. He was younger than my grandfather. We dont know if he is still living or not. But he would have family in D.F.. My grandfather had a lot of sisters. Some went to Tabasco. Some went to Guadalajara. We dont know much more about the sisters. My grandfather's son Louis was the oldest. He has died. He lived most of his life in Mexico City. He had a lot of family. Roughly around 8 or 10 kids. They'd be my cousins. They were born in Mexico City. My Aunt Carmen, his only daughter, lives in L.A. for many years. Probably since the early 70's. She has around 10 kids. There is a lot of Higareda's in L.A. that are my family. I have a lot of cousins that are Higareda's.

The famous soccer player Jose Maria Higareda use to play on the team,"Necaxa". They use to call him "Chema" Higareda. Someone told me He came from Saguayo also and that his family moved to Guadalajara. This Player has a web-site. You could ask for info. from him also.

Another place to look into for info. on family history is through the Morman church in Utah.. They have every family name's history. I haven't looked there yet on Higareda's , but I have done alot of research on my maiden name. Sandra Higareda, Giddings.
I hope this has been helpful. Paco and Sandra
