Hourihane from County Cork to Wigan, Lancs

I'm descended from John and Alice (or Elise) HOURIHANE from County Cork. They left Cork between 1848 and 1851 where they are on the 1851 census for Wigan, Lancashire with several children (Patrick, Mary, Ann, Rose, John, Michael, Margaret) born between 1834 and 1848 in Ireland. By the 1871 census the family name has changed to HORAN, and John has died in Wigan. I'm descended fom their youngest daughter Margaret. I suspect that the Hourihane family in Wales were related in some way.

I'm visiting Dublin in a few weeks to search the Catholic Church records available for Cork in the National Library. Can anyone advise on which parishes I should be looking for? I've only got one day and a long list of Cork Parishes!

My grandfather John Regan's mother was a Mary Hourihane from Cork. A Hourihane from Ireland told me that the Hourihanes came from 3 townlands. Knockavoher(Kilmacabea parish), *Tullig (possibly Kilmacabea parish) and
Corran. "Corran" from Dunderrow parish, "Corran Beg" from Kilmoe parish and "Corran Middle" from Kilmacabea parish.
*Tullig is also in 6 other parishes; Bregoge, Kilerohane, Whitechurch, Drishane, Kilmaloda and Durrus. Keep these parishes in mind when you do your searches.

I have not proven that these townlands are correct. However, I did find a Tim Hourihane in Griffith's Valuation in Kilmacabea parish, location Corran North.

Thanks Fay for your advice. I did make a few finds, but sadly didn't see your message till I got back.

I've just spent my three days in Dublin searching for a 'needle in a haystack' for Margaret, daughter of John and Ellise or Ellen Hourihane born somewhere in Cork c. 1847. Her family moved to Wigan, Lancashire by 1851 where she is the youngest daughter with siblings Patrick, Mary, Anne, Rose, Michael & John. By 1871 they were all known as HORAN.

The nearest I found was Margaret daughter of Curly HOURICAN & Ellen TOBN of Gorladoo 25th May 1846 in Durras RC records. I also found a Margaret d.o. John HOARIHAN & Norri HAURHAN 2nd January 1848 of Rossmore in the same parish record.

Does anyone know if Curly could be a nickname for John or Norrie for Ellen?

The saddest record I found was in Castlehaven & Myross where the priest has written in August 1847 'a dreadful year of famine', and in November 1847 'all are dying of starvation'. There were very few births that year. This put my own fruitless search in perspective.

ELLEN TOBN in the last message should have been TOBIN.

I hate to add to your difficulties but there are also numerous Hourihan(e)s in Caheragh parish. You might be best off by starting with the Tithe Listings which predated the Griffiths Valuation (mid 1850s) to determine possible Hourihan families.
My ggggmother was a Mary Hourihan, b.c. 1821, daughter of a John Hourihane and Mary Harrington, possibly of Bauravilla, Caheragh.

I don't know if this helps anyone but my Great, great, great grand father was John Hourihane of Bauravilla. According to my grand uncle's records, he married Mary Hourihane also of Bauravilla. His son John, married Mary Donovan.
