Hello all,
I am looking for any information about my maternal grandfather, Cleveland H. Karstetter. I know that he was born in Pennsylvania around 1886-1892 and moved out to Whitefish, Montana in the 20's or 30's. He moved with his two brothers, Sumner and Samuel. He started a taxidermy shop in Whitefish. He married Edna Frances Burkhart and had three daughters, Frances Ellen Karstetter (my mother), Amber Louise Karstetter and Jennifer Karstetter.
I cannot find ANY information of where he was born, the date he was born, nor the name of his parents.
Any information would be very helpful.
Thank you,
Kelly Wilke

Kelly,

There is a World War I Draft registration card for Cleveland's younger brother, Sumner Musser Karstetter. On it he says he was born in Woodward, Pennsylvania, which is in Centre Co., so that might be a good place to start looking for records. There are census records for the brothers in Montana, but I didn't see any in Pennsylvania. That could mean you should also be looking for Cleve under one of the many spelling variations of the surname: Kerstetter, Carstetter, Castrator, etc.

My interest in this is that a Karstetter married the sister of one of my Whiting ancestors. The sister's brother was my ggrandfather, married to a Vonada/Vonado. Two Vonada brothers also ended up in Montana. These people were all from Centre and Clinton counties, PA.

Hello,
That is very interesting and I will do that. I know that talking to my mother before she passed away last year she mentioned that Cleve (her father) did much lying about his age and where abouts he truly was from in Pennsylvania. Not sure if there was some misdeeds done when he and his brothers were younger in Pennsylvania or not.
Where about in Montana do your relations end up?

Sounds like an interesting family you're researching. I guess it's mysteries like yours that keep us going!

In 1915 my great-uncle, Arthur C. Vonado, obtained a homestead patent in Fergus Co. MT. He married and had children there before moving his family to Oregon. In 1916 a Charles H. Vonada received a Homestead Entry-Stock Raising land patent in Powder River Co., Montana. During World War II Helena newspapers mentioned an active member of the Navy Mothers Club; 17 times she was Mrs. Charles Vanada and 2 times Mrs. Charles Vonado. I haven't figured out where Charles Vonada fits in but do know he was born in Kansas, where many of the family gathered before heading farther west.

Hello,
Wow that is interesting.
I found out what had happened.
Cleve's father was Joel Kerstetter. I guess Cleve changed his name to Karstetter when moving west.
Also found out that when moving from Germany they change the last name from Kirstetter to Kerstetter.
Very interesting.
Thanks,
Kelly

Kelly,

After we started this exchange I checked the information I've acquired over the years and found Joel and Rebecca in my data base with two older children. This information is from Mary E. Hoffer's book Church Records Sugar Valley Clinton Co., PA, Logan and Green Twps., PA 1852-1956 (Pennsylvania State Society NSDAR, 1977), P. 122. Erah Daisy Karstetter was b. 14 Apr 1875 and christened 30 May 1875, and Samuel Alton Karstetter was b. 26 Mar 1878 and christened 30 Jan 1879. After discovering that I looked at the 1880 census for Logan Twp., Clinton Co. and found the family. According to that census "Erah" is really Eva.

I don't know if the book is still in print and can be ordered, but it has been filmed by the LDS church and could be ordered from your local Family History Center if you want to look at it.

Hello Beth,
According to this link:
http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?ssrc=pt_t9928288_...

The 1900 census that Cleveland and Sumnar are part of Joel and Rebecca's children, which is what I was looking for.
Thank you,

In the 1900 census for Potter Twp.in Centre Co.Pa. Clev. Karstetter is listed as being 15 years old and living with his parents,Joel and Rebecca Karstetter. If you can access my
