Orphanage In Sacramento, Ca 1955-1960
I am trying to locate the names of orphanages in the Sacamento Area around 1955-1960. My mother remembers (very Vividly) being placed in one when she was around 3 or 4 years old with afew of her brothers. She does remember that it was run by nuns. I havent been able to find any leads so if anyone has any information on how I can go about locating these I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks,
anne

Re: Orphanage In Sacramento, Ca 1955-1960
Hello This was interrest, at one time about 1 month I stayed at a Catholic run place... I will decribe it, as good as my memory allows.. For sure the rooms where the beds were was huge had so many kids... we went to church, had a play ground with a swing that went around like those at a Fair, you sit on the seat then swing around.... The nuns were not my favorte people for they took something very personable, a muff, hat, jacket kinda furry white... from my momma.... I would go to church and stick the waver in my pocket, tasted awful for a child, I was 9yrs old... Had family but they did not want me... I did not go home till 1961 May 29, from another place called Clearwater Ranch, Philo, CA... This place was awesome... Still have great memories... Now I don't know if this is the place, but I remember a counselor taking me to a place took time to get there.... See I was happy at the Clearwater Ranch, my parents tried to make me not happy, went back to Clearwater Ranch... Is there any way to find records that they may have, during this time???? Thank ya..

I was also placed in the Sacramento Children's Receiving Home in Nov. 1955. I have been trying to find records on my birth, but I have not been successful. Having grown up in Sacramento, I do recall the original building was in downtown Sacramento, a large brick building on either Stockton Blvd or Broadway?

I know exactly where you guys are talking about i have a very good memory of the place. I was there from 1974 to 1979 we were eventually moved out to group homes when they could no longer afford to keep the nuns there. I also remember names of the nuns and a lady who can possibly help you...post if you want info. It was a good yet also creepy experiance.

Re: Orphanage In Sacramento, Ca 1955-1960
St. Patrick's Children's Home operated from 1932 until the early 60. It was located at 5945 Franklin Blvd. It was run by the Sisters Of Mercy. The original home was in Grass Valley. It is now just a Catholic school. I believe some of the record may still be there. Monsignor Kavanah has been here since the beginning, so you may wish to start with him. He lives at the St. Rose rectory next to the school.
