Surnames: Babbitt, Duval, O'Shaughnessy
In regard to obits for Babbitt, Duval, O'Shaughnessy: Jefferson County has had only one daily newspaper since about 1900, and probably never had more than one at a time. The "Watertown Daily Times" has always carried very good obits, and will provide them, for about $2.00, to the inquirer. Before about 1930 they find it difficult to retrieve them, but after that time they are fairly reasonable. Address on the Jefferson County Website: Washington Street, Watertown NY 13601.

I would like to know the whereabouts of ALICE(formerly DUVAL) and RICHARD BABBITT and the (O')SHAWNESSY family( any spelling) of the Watertown area in the 1900-1930s so I can obtain the censuses for the right area. Also the location of Shawnessy (any spelling) Textile Mills. Our local library in WA state has no indexes for NY state after 1860. Any info appreciated. Mr Shawnessy, possibly the Babbitt son-in-law died in private plane accident in late 1920s, early 30s, Roman Catholic?,Which cemetary? Which newspaper would carry obituary etc? locally, weekly, daily ?-Joyce Duval

Joyce,

You asked where the Mills were located. The one in which both my husband's grandmother and my mom worked was on Factory Street in Watertown, N. Y. My husband thinks it
was across the street from the turn which one takes to go out Huntington Street. It was streetcar accessible because my Mom took the streetcar up from Glen Park. She worked in the office.

Maybe we were wrong -- I find the Corporation listed in the 1962 City Directory (Watertown) as being at 208-210 Moulton St. Were the offices that far separate from the Mills? This location would lead me to think the Mills were much
closer to Mill St. than the location which we suggested previously. Hang in there, Joyce, we'll find out when in Watertown at the end of the month. Shirley

My grandmother was a clerk for the Shawnessy Knitting Mills and also took the trolley from Glen Park. Her last name was Babcock. Wonder if they knew each other.
