I am looking for Cowlings that are descendants of John Peter and Margaret Kershaw, nee Osswell. They settled near Calvin, Illinois known as French Creek Prairie in Southern Illinois in 1818. They migrated from Manchester, Lancashire, England to Philadelphia, PA on July 4, 1818. They had several children, two daughters were nuns, the other children marrying into Spencer, COWLING, Michaels or Michels, and Rawlinson families. I am searching for descendants interested in developing a web page for the descendants. My e-mail is johnspencerinsfca@yahoo.com

Surnames: Cowling, Albin
Do you know anything about a Sarah Cowling who married D. Albin in Wabash county, IL? 1880 shows her divorced, a prostitute with 9 year old twin girls, Ada and Ida. My line is the Albin line.

Sorry, it has taken so long to reply to your query. I was in a hospice for three years and am now in assisted living...just getting back into the saddle of genealogy. I don't know where you live, but I am unfamiliar with the name, Albin. Naturally, much of the Kershaws, Spencers, Michaels and Cowlings lived near Albion and Mt. Carmel, Illinois. I will check and see what I can find for Sarah or her children, Ada and Ida. What is your resource that Sarah was a prostitute?

Surnames: Cowling Spencer Albin Goodbourn Ward Duckworth Lee
The Illinois State Database shows that a Mrs. Sarah (Crowling - SP) Albin married in 1885 to a Charles W. Lee after a short marriage to John Goodbourn and D. Albin. Her date of birth is ca 1857 and John's is 1852. The only two marriages for a Sarah Cowling in the Illinois State Database are to D. Albin (1870 - Wabash County, Illinois) and John Goodbourne(1876 - Edwards County, IL). I can find no listing for an Ada, but an Ida Albin married a Wm. Duckworth in Macon County, Illinois and possibly an L. Ward after that. The residence in the 1900 census was Champaign, Illinois. Sarah A. Cowling would have been the daughter of Edward and Sarah Cowling. The only other Sarah Cowling would have been only age 17 in the 1880 census which would make her a young bride...and why would the Sarah I mention have the name Albin? I believe it was the other Sarah that married a John Goodbourn possibly. There is a Sarah Ellis living with William and Nancy Cowling in Coffee, Wabash County, Illinois. Her date of birth is listed as 1863...I think it is a misprint and should be 1868. The other two children in the household are younger and listed as Cowlings. I am only surmising that she was possibly the daughter by a previous marriage of Mrs. Cowling's and Sarah Ellis changed her name to Sarah Cowling.

The information on Sarah Cowling Albin being a prostitute came from the 1880 census which is online. I show she married Dorastus Olande Albin July 7, 1870 in Wabash county, Illinois. I have been told that you can find Ada's death info in California Death records as Ada Schenck Hanson. Thanks for the info on the marriages.
