Family history says the my great grandfather, August Anderson was a merchant at the railroad shop in West Burlington. Does anyone know where I could get information about a railroad station in West Burlington. Thanks.

IF this link doesn't work, I searched for West Burlington, Iowa and then went to the Commerce site. There I searched for railroad. Good Luck

My father, Glenn Burrell worked in the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy RR shops located in West Burlington. He started out as a machinist apprentice about 1921;and worked up to a lathe machinist level until he quit in 1944. He helped with establishing a union for the workers there in the early thirties. I know that there was a large station for passengers in Burlington; but do not know of one in West Burlington.
During the depression..1937 or 1938; he worked 8 days there.
The workers were told that they would lose seniority and be
let go, if they had another job. I have several pictures that were my fathers; several of a train wreck nearby. My father was also a camera buff and so I have many pictures including slides after the early fifties.I have some of the Zepher train when it was introduced.I hope that this extra info might help you in finding the info you are searching.

Further investigation seems to indicate that my Grandfather August Anderson worked in the railroad manufacturing and repair shops in West Burlington. I e-mailed the Burlington Library and received a copy of an article about the railroad shops. It apparently was a large manufacturing facility around the turn of the century and actually manufactured engines for the CB&Q and other railroads. Would be glad to share it if it is of interest.

Yes, I would be interested. It appears that we are talking about the same mfg site in West Burlington. My status for sharing is to be delayed for some time. We HAD a home network and both computers went down. One has been replaced but now XP is in my life. The volume of my genealogy is large and is being held without true access.
My guru son is in overload and won't be able to help for some time.Sooo, will not be able to do much until after Setember.
Stay in touch. Bonnie

I have scanned the 3 pages (1 page of text and 2 of pictures) and will send them when you wish. You don't happen to have relatives in Henderson County, IL do you. My father attended a Burrell School in Olena, IL and there were several Burrell families in the area.

Where is the town/Burrell school on a map? That is, in relation to Rock Island IL. My Gr-Gr-father..Robert Burrell married Suzan Young in that county. I know it is across the Mississippi river from Davenport Iowa. I have many relatives from IL and IA; I would be interested in knowing more about all of it. Bonnie

The Burrell School was a one-room school house located in Olene, IL. Olena is in Henderson County, IL near Burlington, IA. on the Mississippi and south of Rock Island.

The following link shows the school and students for several years:

The 1899 photo shows an Emma Burrell and the 1903 photo shows an Ira Burrell. In the 1921 photo, Clarence and Opal Carlson are my Uncle and Aunt.

I was born and raised in Burlington. My father wasa b in Boone or Dallas co IA; NW of Des Moines. His father, Webber was B & D there. He is buried in Minburn IA. Webb's
parents are buried in People's cem in Boone co., as well as Robert's parents...Alexander & Cynthia (Baker) Burrell. Alexander was b in 1779 in Fife co Scotland. He d 1872; Robert d 1922; Webb d 1959. My parents left IA in 1944; they eventually settled in CA, and are buried in Rose Hill cem in Whittier Ca.
I do not know, without checking, about the Burrell children in the school pics. Ira does sound familiar. Clarence and Opal sound familiar also.
Do you still live in the midwest? I am probably visiting cousins
with my bro & his wife in Oct. She is attending a class reunion. Naturally, it is in Boone co. Her maiden name was Benton. signed Bonnie

I no longer live in IL but now live in Maryland. My original interest was in my Grandmother Anna Marie Anderson and her parents August and Christina Anderson from Burlington or West Burlington. She married my grandfather Ed Carlson in Burlington and they moved to Henderson Co. IL. Let me know when your PC is up and running and I will send you scans of the West Burlington train yards and a map showing location of the Burrell school.
