Is there a map for the Census Wards for Detriot? I have all the correct addresses for the families I am researching.....but just can not figure out which ward the Address is in, is there Detroit Street Map with the Ward indicated that I can access?

The Addresses for the Census year are as follows:

1900.....431 Franklin St., Detroit
1910.....568 Monroe Ave, Detroit
1920.....295 Lyman St., Detroit

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Dear Michelle,

Try contacting the Burton Historical Collection (part of the main Detroit Public Library) at the following website. They have copies of the city directories and I think the wards may be listed in there-not sure.

http://www.detroit.lib.mi.us/burton/

Do you know that Michigan has the soundex for those years which, when you find your names, you will have the enumeration district, sheet number and line number for the censuses. Much easier than looking through the whole ward.

Dear Elly,

If you are near a library that has an extensive genealogy reference section, it may have the soundexes. In Michigan, the Burton Historical Collection (BHC) at the main Detroit library has them for Michigan as does the State of Michigan Library in Lansing.

I usually order them through the reference desk at my local library in Livonia, MI. The library has to have a microfilm reader for you to use the soundex film and you have to know what reel/reels to order. There is no charge for Livonia residents but others have to pay for the cost of shipping which I think is about $3.00 per reel.

If your local library will order them but doesn't know how or where, have them contact the reference staff at the Livonia Civic Center Library, Livonia MI for information.

I have a partial list of the soundex reels for 1900, 1910 and 1920 (mainly for surnames from M to Z) if you want me to look for your names. Do you know how to figure the soundex code for the surnames? Let me know if you want me to look for the names.

Surnames: Wolfe, Wilczenski
Hi, can you do a look up for me? The name is Wolfe,
clemence. or John Wolfe (or may be spelled Wilczenski)

That would be Clemence in 1920 & John in 1900 or 1910.
If you can give me any info, I can try and find the soundex here. Our library has VERY limited info on Michigan. but I think I can borow from Mi. Somewhere. There may even be a Edward wolfe. Anyone of these would help.

Thank You in Advance, If I can do anything for you in exchange let me know. I live in the State of Washington, Tacoma to be exact.
Nancy (Wolfe) Cosgrove

Dear Nancy,

Soundex Code for Wolfe is W410

For 1920 Michigan Soundex films, the code is M1568, Reel 227 which covers W-356 J. D thru W410 Iva G. Reel 228 covers W410 J. Nakins thru W420 John. I included 228 in case you find a first name that is not in reel 227.

Soundex code for Wilczenski is W425

1910 Michigan code is T1268, reel 241 covers W422 Clarence E thru W425 Robert; reel 242 covers W425 Robert thru W 436 Bertha

1900 Michigan code is T1052, reel 249 include W420 Mildred thru W425 Henrey**; reel 250 covers W425 Henry** thru W426 Nora.

Here is the website for the Livonia Michigan library in case your library may have a question about ordering the census reels. An employee named Sally knows a lot about ordering films.

If you do not know much about the soundex, you might want to get either a genealogy book or try one of the websites that have tutorials, possibly Ancestry.com or the FamilyTree Maker .

Hi Georgia,
Thank you for the info on census wards. I would really appreciate it if you could tell me the role number for Powers, John in Detroit in 1920. I am sorry I didn't respond before now. My Mom had to go in for a surprise surgery for ulcers and I am just catching up on my e-mail now.
Thanks for all the help you give us on the Wayne list.
Elly

Dear Jennifer,

The Soundex code for Ortmann is O635 (that is the letter "O" not zero).

For 1920 the code for Michigan is M1568, reel 193

For 1910, T1268, reel 166

For 1900, T1052, reel 171

These are for the Soundex (miracode in 1910) only. It is not the census.

If you are not familiar with the Soundex/Miracode, it is a system of assigning numbers to letters for names. This helps if your name was misspelled. Once you find them on the soundex, you will have the enumeration district, sheet number and line number to help you find them on the census. There is no Soundex for the 1930 Michigan census. If you are looking for districts/wards, etc. for 1930, possibly a city directory for 1930 would have that information. Michigan city directories are at the Burton Historical Collection of the main Detroit Public Library, the State of Michigan Library in Lansing, MI and the Bentley Historical Library in Ann Arbor, MI. The Mormon church may also have them on microfilm.

Dear Elly,

Your welcome.

Powers P620

1920 code for Michigan is M15678

Reel 204 is P600 L.A. thru P620, Julio
Reel 205 is P620 Jolius thru P625 Arville

It seems odd that reel 204 shows Julio, then 205 starts with Jolius as first names since Julio comes after Jolius alphabetically.
