I've extracted hundreds of Cannata records from LDS mircofilms of Modica church records back to mid-1500s. Had to stop long before I extracted them all, and never typed up teh handwritten forms for the ones not in my direct lines (but are alphabetized and searchable).

Love to exchange with others who have Cannata lines in Modica.

Hi,

My Grandfather, Rosario Cannata, was born in 1882(circa) in Modica, Sicily. He married Concettina Avola around 1911 and soon after moved to Toronto Canada and raised eight children, one whom was my father, John Anthony Cannata (1927-1993). My granfather never talked about his background, we think he had a sister who moved to Argentina put we know little of the family tree.

Would you have any information?

Thank You,
Mark Cannata

Hi Mark,

Crazy way to start off a note on a community board but I think we are related. My parents are Jim and Gladys. Ring a bell?

Would love to see what research you've got and how the Cannata side fits in with the Avola's.

Hi Roseanne,

I remember you well. I have a huge file that lists all the Avola's that came to Canada and most of their descendants.

I will make contact with you on Facebook - then we can exchange e-mails.

It took 8 years for someone to reply...I forgot I registered at this site. Ancestry.ca is another site.

Hello,
My great grandmother's mother's name was Lucia (Lucy) Cannata. She married Dontato Dinardo and they lived in Ottawa. My great grandmother, Adelina Dinardo, was born in 1909 in Ottawa. She and her husband (Carmine Rosanova) were Married at St. Anthony of Padua Church (427 Booth Street, Otttawa) and came to Philadelphia, PA just two days later for their "honeymoon", never to return to Canada. Needless to say, they stayed in Philadelphia, where our family still resides

Any information on Lucy Cannata would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

I wonder if Lucy Cannata had any ties to Philadelphia? Do you know if she did? Could it be just coincidence that my grandfather (Rosario Cannata) came through Ellis Island in New York in 1907 and went directly to Philadelphia? When there he worked in a steel mill and later on the rail road as a cook. He returned to Sicily (Modica) in 1911. He married my grandmother (Concetta Avola) a short time later. In 1914 they came through Ellis Island again and this time headed for Toronto, Ontario, Canada. It is interesting that your grandparents left Canada and ended up in Philadelphia. Were there Cannata's, Dinardo's or Rosanova's there drawing your parents to Philadelphia? I too would like to know more about Lucy Cannata - I will try to find out.

Surnames: Rosanova, Cannata, DiNardo, Silimans
When my great grandmother(Adelina Rosanova nee DiNardo)came to Philadelphia with my great grandfather (Carmine Rosanova) they intially came to stay with her cousin Concetta. Her last name per a border crossing document I found here on Ancestry.com looks like Silimans or Silimano. Either of those last names ring a bell? Concetta lived at 358 East Mechanic Street, Philadelphia, PA.

From what I understand alot of Italians lived in this area of Philadelphia (A neighborhhod dubbed Germantown). The few block radius around Mechanic Street specifically. My great grandparents first lived at 414 the 432 Haines Street (literally one block from Mechanic Street). My great grandfather(Carmine Rosanova) was a very skilled cabinet maker and carpenter. He had a shop just down the street from Cousin Concetta at 366 East Mechanic Street. The family later sold the Haines street home and converted my great grandfathers shop on Mechanic Street to the family home.

Do you have any information on where your grandfather stayed when he was in Philadelphia? If it was in "Germantown" it is very likely he was realted to my greatgrandmother. Her mother's name was Lucia (Lucy) Cannata.

Hi,

I forwarded your last detailed e-mail to some a cousin who sent it off to another cousin. I have not heard back. I still have an Aunt I must visit to see if she heard any stories of relatives in Ottawa before my grand parents arrived to Canada. April 22, 1914 is when my grandfather returned to North America (this time with a wife and child) on a ship called the San Guglielmo. (Rosario and Concetta Cannata with baby daughter Antonina(Anne)). They came through Ellis Island and travelled north to Toronto, Canada.

I met with both an uncle (in his early 90's) and an aunt (in her late 80's) this weekend who say that their father had twin sisters and that both sisters went to Argentina. They say they did not have relatives in the Ottawa area pre- 1914. I don't think Lucy Cannata is related to our family.
