I am researching my ggrandfather James who immigrated from N. Ireland to Mass. in 1896. He arrived through Ellis Island and I noted on the shipping manifest that his intended destination was Pittsburgh. I do know that we have relatives in the Pittsburgh area, the exact connection is unknown at present. I am still gathering information from Ireland regarding James, but do know that his father was David and his grandfather was George. Through family stories we know that there are connections to Scotland. Also, there is a story that maybe 100 years ago, I believe in the states, there was a drowning tragedy, where several Cantley's were lost. Does any of this information connect with your family? In my research name changes back and forth from Cantley to Kentley. Appreciate any help. Looking forward to your reply.

Hi
I have CANTLAY connections in Scotland. My grandmother was Margaret CANTLAY (1882-1946). Her parents were David CANTLAY (1846-1916) and Ann FLORENCE (1846-1929). David was born in Foveran, Aberdeenshire. I think his parents may have been William CANTLAY and Margaret LESLIE.

My grandmother had 8 brothers and sisters. As far as I'm aware (family story) at least 2 of her brothers moved to North america. I was told Canada but I'm not definite. They were called David (~1886-1940) and Robert (~1888-1938).

This is all the information I have on them I'm afraid.

Regards
David

Hi Lynne,

Sorry it took so long to reply. We are still gathering information on the Scottish side of our Cantley's and unfortunately at this time can not see a connection. I will update any information I find to this site. Thanks for replying.

Hi David,

Sorry for the delay in replying. We are still gathering information from our Scottish side and are in the process of entering the data to see all the connections. At this time I do not see a clear connection but will keep you posted. Thanks so much for replying. I do know that James Cantley/Kentley and his brother Hugh immigrated to Massachusetts, James in 1896 through Ellis Island and Hugh in 1909 through Boston. You might want to check out www.ellisisland.org to further your research. I was also told from distant relatives that some of our Cantley's are living in Canada, unfortunately I have not made contact with them yet. Regards, Patty

I have a drowning story in my geneology and the name is very close.
Headline: Five Persons Drowned, by the overturning of a ferry boat in the Big Horn River, near Thermopolis, Wyo, on the 22nd.(1898). The name of the victims are: Harry Beggs, Mrs. Harry Beggs, the infant child of Mr. & Mrs. Beggs, O.P. Gray, (son-inlaw of Mr. Jas V. Cantlin), and Miss Myrtle Cantlin.
Mrs. Gray, wife of one of the victims, was rescued with great difficulty.
The party, all visitors at the Themopolis Hot Springs, were attempting to cross the Big Horn river in a ferry boat.

Hi Patty,
I'm continuing my research about the Cantleys and wondered if you have a family tree online anywhere. I know you've put a lot of work in on the research of our family and it would be a big help to me. I'm still hoping you and I can meet some day. My father died in 2008 so at this time I'm looking after my 98 year old mother.
I believe that prior to Northern Ireland the Cantleys were in Aberdeenshire, Scotland.
Best regards,
Valerie

Hello Patty,

I like you are interested in finding out my family history! I actually still live in N.Ireland and know of a family member who fought in WW1 and is buried at the Menin Gate in Ypres. I have very little information, in fact none at all! If I had a chance to see the tree you have found so far or have any information related to mine, please contact back.

I realise this is much later than when you posted but hope this finds you well.
