The only place I have found in EO from the 40's and 50's is Childrens Aid and Family Services. They are still in business http://www.cafsnj.org/

Good luck

If you find any more info please post it here - I am looking for info on my father's family. He was born in 1929 and was placed in an orphanage in East Orange but we don't know exactly when. I have not been able to find any of his siblings or his parents on census records. He remembered that the orphanage was next to a mental hosp (but he was awful young so don't know how correct that is). Thanks

I lived on Wayne Avenue, Which was between Sanford Avenue & Harrison Avenue in East Orange. I went to Washington Street School on Sanford Ave. I met a few of my classmates and I would have dinner with then and they would come to my house on 56 Wayne Ave. It was (the orpanage) depressing, dark in the basment where meals were served. The home was torn down shortly after WWII. What I'am telling you above happened 1939 - 1943
