I'm looking for the parents of James Brooks, born around 1815. The 1870 census notes that he was born in Pennsylvania, married to an Elizabeth who was also born in Pennsylvania. From what I have found, they had 11 children: Hugh, David, Viola, George, Minerva, Julia Ann, Mary, Albert, James, Nancy, and Iowa. An affidavit, filed in Athens County, Ohio concerning his death states he owned 50 acres in the southwest corner of Section No. 4 in Decatur Township, Washington County, Ohio. This is all the information that I have been able to gather. Any additional information would be appreciated.

Renee, Delighted to meet another cousin. I will gladly share what I have on the family. I also am in contact with another cousin who is descended from James Brooks brother John Brooks. Barbara has sent me several obits from Belpre, Ohio on the family and I have some from here in IL where some of them moved. I do have the names of 3 more children - William, Susannah and Christiana for a total of 15. Hope to hear from you again soon. Thelma

Thelma,
Thank you for offering assistance. This search has been particularly challenging for some reason. I'll first tell what I already know about this family. Several weeks ago I took my grandmother (David Brooks granddaughter) to see her second cousin Cecil Brooks (George Brooks grandson). Cecil is an accomplished gunsmith and is "famous" among gun enthusists and groups like the NRA. Cecil stated that James and Elizabeth Brooks had a total of 22 children. He also told where James Brooks was buried. The site is on land formerly owned by the Brooks in Decatur Township. The land was sold and eventually the township put up a fence around the site since it is located in a cow pasture. Cecil said there was a gravemarker in place. I haven't been to the site yet but plan to. From the Washington County Health Dept. I've obtained the death records of both James and Elizabeth Brooks, James died 1/1/1889 of dehydration, occupation was as a carpenter and Elizabeth died 10/20/1897 of typhoid fever. From their son David Brooks death record, it gives the name Betsy Shayner as his mother. Is Betsy short for Elizabeth? Lastly, from a book called "History of Washington County, Ohio", I found "Brooks, James, age 46, volunteer, August 11, 1862, three years, 92nd regiment, company G, private, served one year, discharged 1863, taken with camp disease and fever, and brought home by his wife".

That's about the extend as to what I know about this family. I would like know more indepth about James and Elizabeth's family. Even more so, I would like to find out who came before; James parents, grandparents, etc., and likewise with Elizabeth. Were the families early colonists? Which countries in Europe did they immigrate from? But really, any additional light you may be able to shine on my search would be appreciated.

I hope I haven't overwhelmed you with too much information but I'm someone who needs to describe/express in great detail. If there is any information I might be able to share with you, please feel free to ask.

Sincerely,
Renee

Are the Brooks of Washington County, Ohio somehow related to the Brooks of Adams County, Ohio??
and after reading through this thread, there are a few Brooks buried in the Stanton Cemetery here in Nebraska that were from or had ties to Illinois, it says so on one of the large Monuments.
Hope This Helps,
Gene

Renee, My Brooks file is fairly long so I will send it to your private email. Our cousin Barb told me that James Brooks fathers name was John. She is decended from James' brother John. I had that Elizabeth's (Betsy is/was a common nickname for Elizabeth) mother's name as Jane Peters. My great grandmother was living next door to her family with a Jane Peters, age 50, born in England in the 1850 census. It's possible Peters comes from a second marriage or they may have just been neighbors. There was another thread on this board or the GenForum board about John Brooks in Athens and Washington Co. Ohio area but I have not had time to check into it yet. My primary sources have been census reports, obituaries and some birth, death and marriage records online. Thank you so much for the death info on James and Elizabeth. We had the month and year of Elizabeth's death because my great grandmother went back to Ohio when she heard she was ill. She arrived too late to see her before she died. Twenty-two children is sure a lot of kids. I wonder if there were any twins. I would love to have copies of the death certificates if you have them. Also a photo of the grave site and stone when you get them. Any info you have on the brothers and sisters marriages, children etc would be great. I will send for the military record for James and copy that to you when I get it. Thelma

Gene, I don't know if they are connected or not. Most of the ones I know about were in Washington and Athens Co., Ohio. There was another Brooks family here in the Pike, Adams, Brown Co area of IL but they came from Kentucky and I believe Tennessee. We have not found a connection with them either. What first names do you have from the Stanton Cemetery? Thanks, Thelma

Thelma,
The names are Bruce 1926 - 51, George 1899 - 1899, James 1852 - 1923, Jesse 1886 - 1886, Katherine 1885 - 1981, Martha 1856 - 1941, Nellie 1888 - 1873, Nicholas O 1895 - 1956, Wendell 1933 - 94, Faye 1900 - 75, and William 1893 - 1982.
I will look for that large inscription of the monument, it mentions that Nicholas and his wife were interred in Wyoming, Illinois.

Gene, Thanks for the names. They probably don't connect. Wyoming, IL is about 100 -150 miles northeast of here. The names in my Brooks family here are James, Albert, Charles and John. Thelma
