I am looking for death certificates, obituaries, or other information on James Harvey Matheny. Date unknown, but do know that he homesteaded near Vilas, Miner County, South Dakota around 1882 and his wife, Marilda Stevens Matheny, died and was buried in or near Howard, Miner Co., SD, on or near June 24, 1924. James was a county commissioner and operated a hardware store in Miner County.

Also, James Harvey Matheny's father, George Washington Matheny, is believed to have settled in Miner County during the 1880's. Date and place of death is unknown. Suggestions for sources are highly welcome, particularly for death information.

Many thanks in advance,

Ken Matheny

I have a genealogy book published in 1967 by Mildred Stevens Anderson (she died 1991, buried in Polk Co., Nebr), and the book is entitled "Our Stevens Heritage 1761-1967", which has info on the James Harvey Matheny and wife Marilda Stevens Matheny families. I have scanned it into the computer (2 pages at a time), and saved each page as a .jpeg file. I can easily burn this folder onto a CD and mail it to you (need your snail-mail address). Also, I am in contact with another descendent of James and Marilda Stevens Matheny, and can direct her to you once you reply to me. Other sources: internet websites: (1) Morman's database: www.familysearch.org; (2) www.Ancestry.com, which has a great database but has an annual fee; (3) www.rootsweb.com; (4) google.com search engine, and type in names or places--be imaginative and spend some time searching here (try matheny genealogy, for example); (5) www.usgenweb.com.
