I am trying to trace Alice Rainbow/Rainbeau/Reinbeau who lived in Surrey around the turn of the century - possibly Godalming. Whether Rainbow was her married name or her maiden name I am not sure. I believe she came from France originally and may have worked as a seamstress at Hampton Court Palace. She had a large family, as many as 10 children and my last confirmed sighting of her was around the time of my grandmother's wedding in the early 1930s.

One of Alice's children was my great-grandmother was called Maude. Maude went on to marry Joseph Dawson and they lived in Lambeth/Tooting for most of their lives.

The only other family history I have is a mourning brooch given to me by my great-grandmother. There is a picture of a young man in it and he (I was told) was my great-grandmother's brother Ben, who died during WW1.

If any of this sounds familiar please contact me. I would love to try and trace this part of my family tree.

Thanks,
Sara.

Hi, my name is Dixie. I am the daughter of Sara Reinbeau. She is the daughter of Kenneth Reinbeau (born in late 1800's). Kenneth is the son of William, who was born in PA. I have some info of the Reinbeaus crossing from Scottland, to England, then to North America. But, I'm currently merging my ancestry with Reinbeaus from Ohio (my line is all PA and WV) and I'm finding some French Canadian migration.
If interested, would love to share. And to gain anything useful.
Happy looking.
Dixie Moore.

Hi,

I'm not sure if this is any help, but my husbands paternal grandmother was called Alice Rainbow and she lived in Long Ditton, Surrey (very near Hampton Court). She died in 1995.

We think she had at least 9 siblings and may have been named after her mother. It sounds as if the Alice you are looking for could be her mother?

Her ancestral name was Reinbeau.

I hope that helps! Good Luck.
Victoria.

I am so sorry for not replying before now, Victoria, but simply forgot I'd posted this and got side-tracked. It does sound like your husband may be a distant cousin. Is there any chance you could send me some more information about the family?

Best wishes,
Sara.

Hi there Sara - I see you have already heard from my sister-in-law Victoria. However, as she does not have any further information, I will pick up the lead, Our paternal grandmother was indeed Alice Rainbow. (She married a Sydney Rabbetts). Her mother was however, Amelia Kate HENDRA. Her Father was Herbert Samuel RAINBOW. I will call my cousin Martyne who has some extensive research on the Rainbows. Either Martyne or myself will get in touch and confirm Herbert Rainbow's siblings and parents, and hopefully we can go from there and track down your Alice.
Cheers & best regards
FIONA RABBETTS

Hi Fiona,

Thanks for the message and I would be really interested to get some more information. However, I have some info for you too!

I checked again with my mother as I was trying to work from information from my grandmother who passed away a few years ago. My grandmother was admanant that Alice was her grandmother but I always thought it was from the maternal line. It now appears that Alice may have adopted or looked after my great-grandfather - George Dawson.

I'm going to try and look into this more but will post again when I have some more details.

Thanks again and best wishes,
Sara.
