Seeking information about the Hem Farm in rural Sandefjord and the Pedersen/Johansen families that lived there, hoping to connect with anybody related or that knows where it was/is. *THEIR CHILDREN*

1. JOHAN “John” BERNHARD JOHANSEN

2. ANTON JOHANSEN

My great grandfather was in the Norwegian Navy, and I believe he jumped ship when he arrived in New York and took on the name "Oscar Hem." He was the only son of Anton & Maren to come to America, and we believe that contact with the Norwegian families ended at that time. More of this family tree can be found at my Rootsweb tree, Hem-Shugrue-Hinch-Thurmond.

The Hem farm in Sandar/Sandefjord, Vestfold would be located south of the City of Sandefjord. On the rather rough map of Vestfold at the following website
http://www.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~norway/vestfold.htm
Hem would be along the highway labelled '303' and probably almost on top of the marked boundary for Tjølling.

I'd recommend getting a better and more detailed map - there might be more than one farm called Hem in that area.

By the 1875 Norwegian census the family was residing on the Hem farm -

You should check if the following books might have any history of that farm and/or family -
"Sandar, grend og gård 1850-1970", 3 volumes by Vilhelm Møller; "Sandeherred, en bygdebok" by Lorens Berg.

Browsing som old messages... Did you ever find the right Hem? Reading the last reply I thought yes there are two places called Hem in Sandefjord. But, no, just almost...

Hem is to the north of the city, just of the E18 highway. The original farm is probably divided but there seemed to be a division already in the 1875 records also. (59 9'5.58" N, 10'21.37" E)

The one referred to south of the city is just outside the border, and is in what used to be Tjølling, now a part of Larvik.

By the way, I am from Sandefjord myself, and the family history includes Bjørnum and also a neighbouring farm of Hem, and Hem in my wifes case. But I didn't see any connection to your family mentioned.
