Hackbarth - Van Dreike - Schultz - Ferrell family in Johnston Co?

Posted: 8 Sep 2012 7:05PM GMT
Classification: Query
Surnames: Hackbarth, van Dreike, Schultz, Ferrell
Does anyone recognize any of the following? My relatives Paul Hackbarth (1880-1918) and Augusta "Gussie" Van Dreike Hackbarth (1880-1976) met and married in Chicago, and had five children: Arthur, Paul, Walter, Louis and Louise (last two were twins). Some time after the 1930 census, at least some of them moved to Wayne or Johnston Counties, NC.

Louise might have married Fred Schultz and had a child Betty, who then married a man with surname Ferrell. Arthur may have married and had two children.

From there the trail goes cold. Can anyone help me connect to my long-lost cousins? Thanks so much!

Thank you for this information! I think the obituary site is down right now, but I will check back until I find it up again. Much appreciated-

FYI I think I found out that Arthur never married. Now I am focused on Louise Hackbarth Schultz, and her (possible) daughter Betty Schultz Ferrell.

Thanks! In the Johnston Co. obituary list, I do see that Leroy Clair Ferrell died around September 10, 1984 and it says "h/o Betty S. Ferrell". Does h/o mean husband of? If so, then maybe that is the Betty Schultz Ferrell I m trying to verify. He is buried in the Clayton Old City Cemetery.

When I search for their wedding, I only see a record of Leroy marrying someone named Sadie in 1954.

It does mean husband of, but I see what you mean about Sadie.

Also complicating the matter, Leroy's older brother Waldo Ferrell married a "Bettie L" who appears to still be alive. Here is a link to Waldo's (and Bettie's) tombstone: http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=pv&GRid=33...

I live in Johnston County, so I'll see if I can find Leroy's tombstone sometime this week. Here's another link to the cemetery with older burials. http://www.johnstoncountygenealogy.org/resources/cemeterydet...

UPDATE: Cemetery pictures and obituaries are attached. Betty L. Ferrell (Waldo's wife) is obviously living. I'm not quite sure if Betty S. Ferrell (Leroy's wife) is living or not, but there is no room beside Leroy's grave for his wife.

I am just back in town after a week away, and am so grateful for this detailed reply. Thank you so much!
The story just gets more complex, doesn't it? In Leroy's obituary, it says that he has a daughter named Mrs. Joan Ferrell. If she is married, how is her name Mrs. Ferrell? Another mystery to ponder-
Thanks once again for your kind help,
Claudia
