I have pictures of Nancy (Campton) and George Washington Reno.My direct line is Nancy's sister Elizabeth married Nelson J Long in Ohio.
George Washington Reno is in a military uniform and I'd love it if someone knew what war it is from...perhaps the Civil War.
Soon I will scan the pictures on here if anyone wants a copy.
I have been neglecting my Long side of the family while searching Waldens in Kentucky.
An important correction..I just discovered that Nancy and Elizabeth were niece and aunt rather than sisters!!!!
It's great to finally try to piece together this family!
I welcome any further info.

Hi Elaine,
Thank you for posting the pictures. I am currently working on this lineage. I believe Nancy's father William Campton was the brother of my great great grandfather, James Claude Campton, whose son John Higgins Campton is my great grandfather. I still have not found documentation that shows William and James Claude were brothers. If my information is correct, though, their father was John Campton (b~1786) and he and his brother William were among the earliest settlers in Highland County, Ohio, having settled there after moving from someplace in Kentucky. Can you confirm?

Yes Don, from the info I have William and James Claude were brothers..sons of John and Nancy Campton.
The info I have says that John,Robert and William Campton came to Ohio from Kentucky.I have a book called "History of the Early Settlement of Highland County,Ohio".In it,John and William are noted as being in the tanning business.John started a tannery in 1803 in New Market and William joined him.Later, about 1808,John bought land in Hillsboro and started a tannery there too.I think he sold the first business to William.

Hi Don,

I can't even recall contacting you in 2011 but I got back to this message as a result of looking for information on my g grandmother, Katherine Holden Campton (b. Louisville, KY 1856, d. St. Louis, MO 1923). I came upon a newspaper article you posted regarding Mrs. J. H. Campton (my g grandfather was John Henry Campton from England) and it caught my eye.

At this point, I do know that John Henry (b. England 1836, d. St. Louis, MO 1911) was living in Louisville, KY in the 1870s and married "Katie" Holden in 1876. I couldn't believe I finally found out that much. But I haven't found evidence of their parents anywhere. I have their death certificates and obituaries. I do know that John Henry lived in NY, KY and MO and I have the names of his parents from that document, but I don't know when he came to this country and can't find anything on either parent. Katherine's mother's first and maiden names were listed "unknown" on her death certificate and I can't find anything on her father, named John Holden on her death certificate.

I've done my DNA on 23andMe, AncestryDNA and am awaiting test results from Family Tree DNA. Strangely, on 23andMe when I search for DNA relatives under "Campton" not a single person shows up. Same with all my other grandparents' surnames.

Good to see another Campton here! Have a great 4th.

Best,
Elaine Campton Gherardi

PS You thanked me for posting pictures. Did I post pictures? :-O

Hi Elaine Campton Gherardi,

Don was thanking me ...another Elaine! See our posts to each other above.
Could John Henry's parents have also come to the United States? You don't say what their death certs and obits say in terms of where they lived and died.

No wonder I was confused!! Hello Elaine.

On John Henry Campton's death certificate it states that his father was Edmund Campton and his mother was Mary Ashworth, both from England. I have not been able to find any information on them, when if ever - they came to the U.S.- or when John Henry came to the U.S. In his obit it mentions he lived had also lived in New York and Louisville, KY. That is where he married Katherine Holden in 1876 and his first child, Lillie (aka Liiliadea, Lillia) was born in Kentucky, according to census records. Very frustrating, not finding any information on the parents of my great-grandparents.

Thanks, Elaine

Elaine: "J.H. Campton" is John Higgins Campton, my great grandfather, born in Hillsboro, OH in 1851. The "Mrs" is my great grandmother, Elizabeth Ann Knowles (maiden). Their marriage was the second for both of them. I can document my Campton lineage back to pre-statehood Ohio in 1803, but it is unclear whether the grandfather of John Higgins Campton (also "John Campton") arrived there from Kentucky or Pennsylvania with his brother William and possibly one other brother, Robert.

Yes, I caught the "Higgins" instead of "Henry" right away. The other Elaine replied to my original post, as you can see. There aren't many Elaine's around so you can imagine my confusion!

Thanks, Don
