Hi, Bob!

I'm taking a side trip and trying to locate some of underground railroad participants in Sullivan & Lycoming counties. I find references to John Hill, but who was he? I believe Hillsgrove's John Hill, who was married to Mary Robb, died in 1834, and John Cheatle Hill, their son, died in 1841. I can't find anything to indicate that John C. had a son, although I think perhaps a Franklin Hill may have been one.

Do you have anything, or is there anyone who might?

Thank you!

Hi, Kathy:

I will ask Joyce Ingerson if she can assist in any way. She seems to be the “Hill” expert in the area.

Thanks,

Bob

Hello Bob,

Re: Kathy Heilman's query

Hillsgrove's John Hill, spouse Mary Robb, died in 1834; their son, John Cheatle Hill, died in 1841.

I can't find anything to indicate that John C. had a son,
although I think perhaps a Franklin Hill may have been one.

Perhaps Kathy Heilman is referencing (William) Franklin Hill, married 06 Nov 1845 to 1st spouse Sarah Ellen Webster;

2nd Hannah...? I do not have link to his parents either.

Children of Franklin & Sarah were:

Elizabeth Hill

Charles W Hill, 1849-1927, married Maria Burkholder

Lucy Ann Hill, 1851-1894, married Oliver W Taylor

Joseph Cowden Hill, 1854-1927,

Mary Hill

Henry Hill

Ellen Hill

Chester Eben Hill, 1863-1932, married Anna E Snell

Sincerely,

Joyce Ingerson

Thank you both.

Yes, I have that information on Wm. Franklin Hill, although not that his 1st name was William. From land records for John Cheatle, it looks like he and Wm. Franklin were in the same part of Lyc. Co. The age would be right for a son of John C. and I haven't tied him to any of the other Hill families. The Websters, Hills and Robbs have had ties since the 1700s.

Joyce,

I noticed that you are also researching Snell. There are Snells buried in the Hillsgrove Cemetery. I really believe there is some connection between Franklin and the Johns.

At this point, I'm trying to find participants in the Underground Railroad.

Thank you!

Hello Joyce, I hope you are the Hill expert, I'm searching for info on my GGreat Grandfather William Smith, b 1839 in PA, poss Lycoming County, his wife was Susan Neoma, b 1838 in PA, they moved to VA with a Thomas Opp, also from PA, some people have him listed as married to Sarah Hill, daughter of Andrew and Amy Hartman Hill, any help would be great, this is my Smith wall, I live in VA, and still trying to find more on them, in 1902 William's obit in Washington Post newspaper, a copy was sent to Williamsport, Pa thanks Wayne

Hello Wayne,

First of all, I believe Bob Sweeney wrote "seems to be the Hill expert.” Next, I have not found a relationship

with John Hill nor William Franklin Hill family previously addressed.

At a great disadvantage not living in this local area, I have limited access to old local documents from

Courthouses. Therefore, this is the extent of documentation on Andrew Hill of whom you reference which lived in Sullivan County area.

1850 United States Federal Census > Pennsylvania > Sullivan > Davidson

Enumerated 30 Sep 1850

Name: Andrew Hill

Age: 49

Estimated birth year: abt 1801

Birth place: Pennsylvania

Gender: Male

Occupation: Carpenter

Real Estate: 200

Amy, age 38, born in PA;

Suffria, age 17, born in PA;

Mary Ann, age 16, born in PA;

Susan, age 14, born in PA;

Sarah Jane, age 12, born in PA;

Rebecca, age 9, born in PA;

Phoebe E, age 6, born in PA;

Harriet, age 3, born in PA;

John T, age 1, born in PA

Home in 1850(City,County,State): Davidson, Sullivan, Pennsylvania

Immediate neighbors: George Reed, age 51; John Phillips, age 37

1840 United States Federal Census > Pennsylvania > Lycoming > Franklin

Name: Andrew Hill

1 male age 30<40y= Andrew Hill, age 38/39

4 females ages <5y= Susan, age 4; Sarah Jane, age 2; Unknown; Unknown

2 females 5<10y=Sophia, age 7; Mary Ann, age 6

1 female age 15<20y=unknown

1 female age 20<30= Amy, abt age 28

Immediate neighbors: Thomas A Richart; Jacob Foch (name corrected to Jacob Fought)

Question: Was another family living within this home with family of Andrew Hill in 1840?

Lycoming County published genealogist, the late Carmen Hill has written,

Frederick Hill left son Andrew Hill, under guardianship of George Doctor his uncle.

Who was Frederick Hill?

Again from Carmen Hill, who sought local records, has pieced together these families:

Captain John Jacob Hill, of Muncy had 4 brothers, 3 sisters

Captain John Jacob Hill, his wife was Magdalena, were parents to 14 children =

7 sons and 7 daughters.

5 sons either killed or captured by Indians at Muncy, PA, 2 sons survived

after his family came to the Muncy vicinity; 5 daughters are documented in files of Muncy Historical Society

Eve Hill married J George Doctor;

Catherine Hill married Henry Hahn;

Frederick Hill married Susanna Swartz

Jacob Hill married Catherine Cochner (Karschner)

Mary Hill married Daniel Buck

John or Johannes Hill

Hannah Sarah Hill married Daniel Gortner

Elizabeth married John Baker

DOCTOR DEEDS & WILLS

LYCOMING CO., PA

DEEDS 16:534

Heirs & Relict of George Doctor: Magdalena (wife), Henry, Leonard, George Jr., Godfrey, Valentine, Catharine, Mary & Elizabeth w/o Wm. Bailey, all of Muncy Creek

to

Frederick Koch (occasionally written & pronounced Coak)

Release 5 Dec. 1801 200 pounds

Frederick Koch & George Doctor Sr. were tenants in common;

on 27 Aug. 1794 George Sr. & Frederick purchased tract of land in Muncy Creek "Bonham" of Levi Hillingsworth & Hannah his wife for 300 pounds gold & silver - where Frederick Koch and Godfrey Doctor now live. (See Northumberland Co. Deeds G: 138)

I have not pursued Andrew Hill family records other than offspring of Andrew and Amy.

In closing, I believe there is a question whether Andrew Hill lived in Fairmont, Luzerne County at one time.

Respectfully,

Joyce I

There were probably at least 3 Hill families lliving in the Lycoming County area. My children descend from Capt. Jacob Hill, who was from Berks Co. and of German descent. I have quite a bit of information on that family.

John Hill of Hillsgrove was the son of John & Susanna Hill and arrived in New York from Upton, Leicester, England in 15 Nov 1793. He married Mary Robb, the daughter of Susanna Fleming and Robert and Susanna Fleming Robb, on 15 Mar 1796.

I have seen many references to a John Hil, who was involved in the Underground Railroad and took runaways to Marshall Battin. I'm interested in finding more information on this John Hill, his family connections and his role in the Underground Railroad.

Thank you!
