Does anyone know about the origin of the town of SAUM, or any early history and settlement of the place?

I do not know the exact origin, but I can tell you that Saum is historically significant because of the school that is still standing there. Here is a description from a history book:

SAUM, a village located in Battle Township, section 24; it has had a post office since 1904 and is the site of a restored one-room log school, which stands next to the Saum school built in 1912, the first consolidated school in Minnesota and the third in the United States.

Saum was named after an early settler by the name of John Saum. Other names were submitted when they applied for a post office and Saum was the name chosen. I know that several of his daughters moved to Canada but not sure if any are still living now. I live in Saum!
