Was it common to name two children the same name? If you have a son named Antal, and he dies as a child, would you then name a later son Antal as well?

Yes, that would be common in many cultures to name a second child after a deceased sibling.

In some cultures, such as Scottish, it is customary to name the oldest two sons after their grandfathers and oldest two daughters after their grandmothers.

If one of those children dies, it's common to have a the next child born become a new name sake.

Thank you both. It certainly makes things a bit more difficult.

Just browsing and saw this - sorry am going to make it even more difficult! Scotland is not the only country with the tradition of naming children after grandparents - i.e. 1st daughter after maternal grandma, 2nd after paternal grandma and vice versa. I met an Afrikaans family in South Africa where the two living daughters had exactly the same names because the two grandmas had exactly the same names and they could not refuse the tradition or there would have been a family row! Johanna Elisabeth Magaretha - the second used her second name for daily use but apparently there was no legal hindrance to them both having exactly the same names and this applies to other countries as well. For what it is worth, just to show it can happen.

Once I came across two brothers, who both lived to be adults, and who were given the same name. Their father named the first John, but their father also had a brother named John who had no children. His bother ask that the younger the son be named John also, for him, and he would in turn make him his heir. Hope you could follow that.
