Does anyone know the parents of John Jarnagin. He was born abt 1720. His wife was Mary Bynum. I have traced my family line back to him but can't seem to find his parents. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I have him listed as Col John Jarnagin, but thats as far as I have and I'm not sure that we are related I'm working on a theory. I had found this information in the Historic Society in Savannah GA a few weeks ago and I'm trying to connect the lines with Hardy, Needham Jernigan which I'm sure they connect just not sure where. I'm actually looking for a David married to Elizabeth.

Needham Jarnigan was John Jarnigan's Great Grandson, He belonged to Noah Jarnigan.
I descend through Needham's older brother Asa.
Recently I have come across info that says John's parents were Thomas Jarnigan & Elizabeth Holland/Hewes/Hughes.
Thomas born abt. 1690 Died abt. 1760.
It also had Thomas's parents as: John Jarnigan Born abt. 1660 Nanesond, Va Died abt. 1730 & Joan Harwell Born ? Suffolk Co England.
This John's parents as: Thomas Jernegan Born 12/28/1618 Poslingford, Suffolk, England Died abt. 1680 & ? Allyington.
This Thomas's Parents: Thomas Jernegan Born Abt. 1588 England Died 8/7/1645 & Elinor Wentworth.

I was wondering if this thread was still open? Im searching the Jarnagin line and it is very intersting. I have traced mine back to John Jarnagin/Susannah Clark (though not completely verified yet) and I noticed how the spelling of the name changes as it goes back to England. Any info is appreciated. Hello Sean,

We posted back and forth a couple of days ago. It seems you have discovered since then that your lineage goes back to John and Susanna Clark Jarnagin. This is my line also. I am descended from their Son D. Nelson Jarnagin.
There has been some discussion about Col John and Mary Bynum Jarnagin being the parents of John and Capt Thomas Jarnagin and their siblings.

I understand that there hasn't been complete verification on this connection even though my book The "Jarnagin Collection" and allied families has them listed as the first Jarnagins of our line.

The family name in England according to information that I have read and information that my late Aunt Jo related to my Mom, was Jerningham. It seem there was a falling out between two factions of the Jernigan family, because of an ancestor's allegience to Queen Mary ( bloody Mary) as she was called.

He was Sir Thomas Jernigan, because he was knighted for his loyalty to Queen Mary, well some of the family took the name of Jerningham because they didn't want to be associated with Thomas Jernigan, or Queen Mary.

This is the story that I was told and have read also, but don't know for sure if the details are completely correct.

Now the first of the family to come to America, last name was Jernigan. Somehow down the line a ways one of the Men changed their name to Jarnagin, and this is the spelling that everyone in our particular line goes by.

There are other spellings of the name, but as far as I know no one in the Family starting from John and Capt Thomas Jarnagin who were brothers, have ever used the other spellings.

Debbie Gragg

I found this website that I had visited a long time ago but forgot. This website has the info I related in my last post. I don't know how much is correct but it seems to be well documented. Check it out for yourself.

Now the info I got wrong in my last post, was that the Man who was Knighted was Sir Henry Jernigan and not Thomas.

Debbie

Here is another Jernigan family website. Now this website was active when I first started researching the Jarnagins. It was a very active community with a e-mail list and everything.

I don't think it exists anymore except as old webpages, but you can find much info here on current family researchers.

The e-mail addresses might be out dated on some of the people but some of the e-mail addresses might still be valid.
