I'm trying to find any records of William Shortman- who married Ellen Taylor then moved to Canada, early 1900's. They married in Manchester; thats the earliest record I can find of him.

A William Shortman married Sarah Ann Williams on 24th Dec 1882 at Salford, Lancashire.

On the 1891 Census at 21 Commission St, Salford, Manchester....there is then the following family:

Wm Shortman aged 27 b Bristol
Sarah A Shortman 27 b Manchester
Minnie daughter 7 b Pendleton
William Son 5 b Salford
Sarah L daughter 4 b Salford

On the next census for 1901, at Gardner St, Pendleton,
the household is now as follows...

Wm Shortman aged 36 Whitesmith Cycle Maker Worker At Home born Bristol
Sarah Ann Shortman wife aged 36 born Gorton, Manchester, Lancs.
William Shortman son aged 15 Whitesmith Cycle Maker W At Home b Pendleton.
Sarah Eliz Daughter 14 Cotton Mill Worker b Pendleton
Florence Daughter 11 b Pendleton
Ada Daughter 8 b Pendleton
Jno Son 3 b Pendleton

Hope this helps. Check it out though,
Brian

P.S. Regarding William Shortman (born 1886 on the above two census returns), I think this is the William who married Ellen Taylor in 1903, because you already have his army papers saying that he was a Fitter, Cycle Maker & Electrician from Pendleton. I am pretty sure it is the correct family.

Thankyou- it does help, its really hard to find out anything , especially since he lost a of his personal things when he first went to Canada. He came with a friend to find work, but his things were stolen @ a boardinghouse in Toronto.
Are you related to him?

No, not related. I simply picked your post at random for something to do. ....I believe William may have departed Liverpool for Halifax, aged 22, on 2nd April 1904. The ship was the SIBERIAN. If you look up Border Crossings from Canada to US, it also mentions the SIBERIAN there. It says his wife was Ellen, 68 Mebourne Avenue, Toronto, and his destination was Niagra Falls. He is said to have been 5ft 6 ins, hair red, Eyes blue, and pockmarked.

Ellen may have been on the Lake Champlain, departing Liverpool on 17th Nov 1904 going to St John, New Brunswick.

Ellen's voyage was difficult to find. The main reason is that she is listed as being as being 28 in 1904, which would mean she was born in 1876, whereas I think she was born about 1883. So if you search the Ships Lists using the birth dates 1882 or 1883 it doesn't come up. Also, she is on the ships list [if it really is her] as a Mrs E Shortman, so if you look for her under Ellen, Helen or Ann, it doesn't come up.
