Thank you for your response. No, my Nettie Tull has turned out to be Nettie (Janette/Jeanette) Tewell born 1855 in Pennsylvania and died in 1922 in Long Beach, Los Angeles County, California of the flu. She apparently did not tell her children the true spelling of her name because they passed the info on her as Toole, Tool, and Tull. In 1873, when she married Mark Shadduck, she knew the usual spelling of her name on her marriage licence. Since she was 18 it is not likely that she just forgot. Her husband's family had a history of changing the spelling of their surname to conceal origins to avoid persecution. Her family had been involved in governing controvercies and secession movements in Pennsylvania/Virginia.
