1786, Franklin Co., VA,
Apparently the Blankenships were a rowdy frontier clan as indicated by the following excerpt
from early Franklin Co., Va court records in the Franklin County Bicentennial Commision's
"History of Franklin County"..."The wording in assault cases often was more dramatic than the
actual event. In November 1786 for example, Samuel Dillion charged that Barnett, Elijah, Elisha,
Hezekiah, Isham(jr.), Isham(Sr.), John and William Blankenship, with 'swords, Clubs, Fists upon
the said plaintiff...an assault did make and him did beat wound and ill treat so that of his life it was
greatly despaired.' Either Dillion exaggerated or the Blankenships were remarkably inept; eventually
his suit-for 500 lbs in damages- was dismissed.

[NOTE: What is interesting to me is the mention of the name NOEL as one of the sons of John and Elizabeth Blankenship. I have his name as Nowell because I descend from him. However, on the land patents it looks as if his name is NOVELL and possibly NOWELL. It would seem to be that the name is, in fact, NOEL but that it occasionally is rendered as NOEL. So if you phoneticize it you can spell the name either way, i.e. Nowell or Noell. Perhaps his father and even the son were illiterate and couldn't actually spell the name consistently.]"

1. "John did marry a Jane, but not Sarah Jane Royall, d/o Joseph Royall and Katherine Banks. She married a John Wilkinson several generations back. Jane is an unknown to me at this point, after 20 years of looking. Any ideas? Not Sarah Royall, d/o Joseph and Katherine Banks Royall. That Sarah died before 4 Feb 1688/9, Charles City Co VA.(I think). Maybe there's a later Sarah Jane Royall or a Jane Royall, but I haven't found one. Would like to do so." Karen kaenwood@del.net

iv. Benjamine Wilkinson

Notes for Benjamine Wilkinson:
1. "I am trying to find Benjamin's children, have been: Susannah Wilkinson Hardcastle, Thomas, William, John, maybe Lewis. I think he had a daughter Mary. Or he had a son to marry a Mary. found in the Pleas and Quarter seesions where 4 Wilkinson children were bound out to families in the area. We can't place these children.
In 1812, Sarah Wilkerson, orphan daughter of Mary Wilkerson was bound to Margaret McMurry. She was 12 yrs old.
In 1813, Rebeccah Wilkerson was bound out to Abraham Crow, Rebecca was 4 yrs old.
In 1816 and India Wilkerson had been bound to Margaret Ethrington then to Will Jones and then back to Margaret Ethrington and James Withrow' name was mentioned in the record. James Withrow ended up marrying Margaret Ethrington.
In 1816, Adam Wilkerson was bound out to Abraham Crow. Adam was 4 yrs old.
I have learned that Abraham Crow was apoointed to take care of the orphanes. All about this time frame, we have found Ben moving to TN< with Susannah Wilkinson Hardcastle. I don;t know if Ben was taking care of the children, and maybe his daughter or the kids mother died and he was too old to take care of them, or what.
I can not find India, Rebeccah, and Adam anywhere now. I dont know if they made it out of childhood or not. I do know Sarah did. Sarah is my GGG grandmother who married John Philbeck. They lived on the Rutherford /Cleveland County line, close to New house. Off of Hinton Creek road. Ben Wilkinson lived in Golden Valley and found out Abraham Crow lived in Duncan's Creek, which is close to Golden Valley.
I went to Raleigh in October. I found a Family Bible listing for Joshua Wilkinson. It lists Joshua's father as Benjamin and Mary Wilkinson as his parents. But this was in Pitt County. How did the Wilkinson's come down from VA? Did they come thry Granville county? Do you know if they split up and went toward the coast? Off of Hinton Creek road. Ben Wilkinson lived in Golden Valley and found out Abraham Crow lived in Duncan's Creek, which is close to Golden Valley." Kim KWood17706@aol.com

128. Ralph Blankenship, Sr., born 1662 in prob., Cumbria, England; died 1714 in Roxdale Estate, Henrico Co., VA. He was the son of 256. American Blankenships. He married 129. Martha ? Abt. 1690 in VA.
129. Martha ?, born Abt. 1660. She was the daughter of 258. Charles Clay and 259. Hannah Wilson.

Notes for Ralph Blankenship, Sr.:
1. . Ralph Blankinship, Sr. was born 1662 in probably Cambria, England, and died 1714 in Roxdale, Henrico Co., VA. He married MARTHA (last name unknown) about 1690 in Henrico Co., Virginia. Charles and Hannah were neighbors of Ralph Blankenship who lived just north of Conjurer’s Neck and Swift Creek, Virginia. This same Hannah Wilson later married another neighbor Edward Stanley following her first husband's death. After Hannah's death Edward Stanley married Martha Blankenship in 1716 following the death of her first husband Ralph Blankenship who died in 1714.
2. " Richard Kennon petitioned for 8,000 acres for importing 90 white persons and seventy negroes in 1686 and 1687, Ralph Blenkship, was named as one of those imported. (Gayle King Blankenship's book "Blankenship Ancestors")The first reference to Ralph Blankship appears April 1, 1690, Henrico Order Book 1678-1693, page 326. I have copies of the original, and of the handwritten copy made during the Revolutionary period. The entry reads: Upon the peticon of Rich'd Kennon these may certify that there is due unto him eight thousand acres of land for ye inportacon of ninety servts. into this colony whose names are under written & for seventy persons more being negroes, the same being legally prov'd by his oath in open court. The name Ralph Blankship appears as the 68th name on a list of 90 persons."
Don Blankenship db-email@earthlink.net
3. "We know that on June 16, 1714 Ralph BLANKSHIP was named as head right of Capt. Henry Harrison & Philip Ludwell for land they claimed in Surry and Isle of Wight. (Patent. 10:165).
The Isle of Wright, Virginia is a small village 17.5 miles WSW of Newport News, VA. Surry is another village 17.5 miles NNW of Isle of Wright. It is very close to Jamestown and is about 32 miles from where Ralph BLANKINSHIP first homesteaded in Henrico County, VA. The Isle of Write is about 45 miles southeast of Ralph's original homestead. The legal court document shows that Ralph was being claimed as a person whose sea transportation from Europe (England) was paid for by Capt. Henry Harrison and Philip Ludwell. The Virginia colony law at the time allowed anyone who paid for the
transportation of another person to Virginia could claim the right (head right) to possession of 50 acres of land as their reward for bringing that person to America. If this claim for land was valid, and not a
fraudulent claim, it would mean that Capt. Henry Harrison and Philip Ludwell, had, in fact, paid for Ralph's return voyage from England to America. Did Ralph sense that his death was imminent circa 1713 and want to make a trip to his homeland just before he died? Did the debt Ralph incurred near the time of his death result from his having to pay for one leg of his voyage to Europe. No one has ever answered this question which I now leave for you. Notes for Martha ?:
1." We don't know when Martha (wife of Ralph Blankinship the immigrant) was born as there has never been a birth record found. We also don't know her parents. It is possible she was born about 1660 and that she was the daughter of Charles Clay (1636-1686) and Hannah Wilson (1642-1706) but it cannot yet be proven. This information is based on the fact that two of the Clay brothers who also were children of Charles and Hannah appeared on the death inventory and will of Ralph Blankinship and Martha's second husband Edward Stanley. This would have been properly done to protect Martha's dowry if her brothers had been witnesses to Martha's husband's wills or death inventory. It's only circumstantial evidence, but its certainly possible. If this was the case then Edward Stanly would have married Hannah Wilson (the mother) after Charles Clay died in 1686, She married Edward Stanley in 1690 and died 16 years later in 1706. Edward Stanley then remained a widower until 1716 when he married Martha, the former wife of Ralph Blankenship. Just conjecture based on circumstantial evidence. This Clay family lived right next to Ralph Blankenship just north of Swift Creek." Don
2. "I ran across a web site several years ago (and have lost the address thereto) that claimed his wife was Martha HATCHER, daughter of Henry and Anne (Lound) Hatcher. I have since found several Hatcher web sites that repeat this information, although without citing a source. I recently ran across the book, Genealogies of Virginia Families, Vol. II, Cobb-Hay, which has a discussion of the Hatcher family beginning on page 870. On page 871, there is a discussion of the will of Henry Hatcher, wherein children Henry, William, Mary, Ann, and Matthew are named. No Martha. However, Anne (Lound) Hatcher's father, Henry Lound, was named the children's guardian in 1678 and Henry Lound's will mentions grandchildren Henry Hatcher, Ann Ward, Mary Tanner, and Martha Blanks. Based on other info presented, Henry, Ann, and Mary were definitely children of Henry and Anne Hatcher. Who was this Martha? And does Blanks equal Blankenship? I have been unable to confirm the identity of this Martha or the identification of Ralph Blankenship's wife as Martha Hatcher." Rodney Marsh rmarsh@scsengineers.com

Children of Ralph Blankenship and Martha ? are:
i. William Blankenship, born Abt. 1691 in Henrico Co., VA; died April 1745 in Henrico Co, VA; married Mary ? Abt. 1715.

Notes for William Blankenship:
1714 William Blankenship fully documented in the Maryland Prerogative Court records in the year 1714. This is
no doubt the son of Ralph and Martha who was then 125 miles north of his home in Henrico Co., VA.
He was in Ann Arundel County were Annapolis is located on the Chesapeake. It is reasonable to
assume that William was an adult at this time which means he was at least 21 years of age. Subtract
21from 1714 and we get 1693 as a possible birth date for him. He has always been recorded in
genealogy records as born in 1695 and that simply cannot be - because in 1714 he would only have
been 19. Why was he was in Maryland? Was it because he was en route to Marion, Massachusetts to
meet with English friends he or his family formerly knew in England, or had perhaps known at some
previous time in Virginia. Lets temporarily give a birth date to William Blankenship, son of Ralph and
Martha, as 1691.

(He also may have been the father of William, Richard And Henry as well as a daughter who married Richard Dennis And another daugher who married Machel Marshall. When Joseph died in about 1665, Katherine was a wealthy woman and married a second time to Henry Isham, Sr. of Bermueda Hundred Plantation in Virginia. According to custom, Joseph Royall's estate became the property of the new husband. Henry Isham added another wing onto the residence which was enhanced with tall pines and an English Flower Garden and was enclosed within a white picket fence. Katherine and Henry Isham were the leaders of Virginia Society at that time. They had three children together. Mary , who married William Randolph , Anne who married Francis Eppes and
Henry Isham, Jr who died as a young unmarried man; he was lost at sea. In his will dated 11/13/1678, her son left Katherine, his mother one third of his property which was in both VA and England. Through this second marrriage, Katherine is the direct ancestor of Thomas Jefferson and John Marshall. Katherine's daughter Mary Isham was a much-courted belle in the scattered plantation society of the region. She was a charming young lady, known to play a musical instrument called a cittern. William Randolph married Mary Isham and they have been called the "Adam and Eve of Virginia".

256. American Blankenships

Notes for American Blankenships:
1. Compiled by James W. Blankenship jkblank1@sbcglobal.net
2. This project was started Feb., 2001. It is my goal to outline the entire family in America, and make it free to everyone. I would like to invite everyone to submit any line of Blankenchips/Blankenships/Blankinships/Blankingships for inclusion in this family database. Just attach a report of the line to an E-mail to me. Remember sharing with me is sharing with the rest of the world.
3. In order to include all of the Blankenchip/Blankenship/Blankinship/Blankingship's in America, I needed a common parent to tie all of the branches together for now. So I've created American Blankenships as a false parent. It is here that I will attach each branch so that a report will include all branches of the family. If you have any information on the true parents of any of these, Please let me know.
4. Because of the various spellings of the last name, I need to use a common spelling for research purposes. The most common spelling in use is the Blank{en}ship spelling. So by default it will be the one that I use from Ralph till about the 1850's when the census starts with the first names of everyone. I'll use the blank(in)ship spelling from James the same way, that will help keep the two different families seperate. After that I will use the spelling of the submitters. All information that we find will be recorded in the notes sections with the spelling as it was found.
5. Through out the database you will find the Names and E-Address's of the researchers that have submitted the information.
6. Anyone wishing to help with research is encouraged to join us on the Roots Web Blankinship List (BLANKINSHIP-L@rootsweb.com) . It is here that the information coming in will be posted to keep everyone up to speed.

xi. Unknown Blankinship, born Abt. 1700; married Anne ?; died Abt. 1763 in Marion, Plymouth, MA.

Notes for Anne ?:
1."Colonel Blankenship says in his book “Blankenship Family History” that he became aware of an oral history of Ralph Blankinship’s daughter Anne in which it was told that she became pregnant out of wedlock and was subsequently banished or that she went away from her parent's home in shame. A man named Gordon was said to have been the father of Anne’s child. The love child of Anne was named James and he was born 27 October 1720 in the hamlet of Marion, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. Nothing more is known of the man named Gordon. It is presumed that following Anne’s banishment from her parent’s home she probably departed Henrico County, Virginia and traveled to Massachusetts in the early summer of 1720 during her second trimester of pregnancy."
2. Other Then the Colonel's tale. There are no known facts to place Anne as Ralph's daughter. Most Genealogists today, be live that her line is independent of the Ralph's. For a starting point, I have set her up as the wife of an unknown Blankinship. Assuming that she gave her son James his fathers last name. That gives use several things to look for.
Was unknown and Anne married? Did they get married here in America? Did they get married else were and travel here? (passenger lists) Was she a local gal that married a sailor? Was unknown a member of a crew that made regular stops in Massachusetts? Lots of possibilities.
