I have a book "History of Manchester, CT" written in 1928. It lists civil war and WWI soldiers from Manchester. There are numerous references to Cheney brothers in this book. If anyone wants info, please contact me at strohgrp@pdq.net. I am researching Smiths of Manchester, Windsor, and Wapping, CT.

Donna,
I am a direct decendent of the Manchester Cheney's. My great Uncle is Jacob Cheney who resides in Manchester at this time. He is 90 years old. Did you write this book, if not please let me know where I can get a copy. My fathers family is all from there.

Hi - my mom has a picture of a Charles Cheney, silk merchant, Connecticut. I have just discovered the Cheney Brothers was a well-known silk company. Is this the same line? We have no idea why my great-grandparents had this photo - maybe a connection to our Gaston ancestors in Illinois? Do you have any Cheneys in Illinois? The Gaston and Tear families lived near Bloomington, Illinois in the late 1800s, near a town called Cheney's Grove. Do you have any information? Thanks.

Sandie,

Charles Herman Cheney was my great Grandfather. He was the president/Manager of the Cheney Mills railroad. He passed on about 1957 at 80+ years of age. I am forwarding your note on to my Father and Uncle. I have no idea why he would have been in IL. If I could get a copy of the picture, I would gladly pay for it. Does it have any dates or other names on it? You really have me curious.

Hi - I'm thinking this must be a different Charles, because it says on the back of the picture Charles Cheney, silk merchant. Are you connected to the Cheney Brothers silk manufacturing company of Manchester? PS - thanks for the very quick reply!

Yes, My great grandfather (Charles Herman Cheney) is a cousin of the Cheney Brothers. He worked at the mills his entire life, as I believe his father (My great great Grandfather, Charles S.Cheney)did. The railroad I mentioned was operated by the mills to xport the materials to NYC. This is my Uncles email. He has done extensive research on the Cheney Family. My Grandmother, his Mother was a Cheney. If this is the same Charles, his youngest child Jacob is now 94ish and still lives in Manchester CT were the mills were located.

Hi Susan -

I will be visiting my mom next week and will try to make a copy of the photo for you. This Charles Cheney would be your cousin, as he is one of the "Cheney Brothers", I believe. I discovered last night that I am not a relative of the Cheneys, but that this Charles Cheney married into my line - the Shaws. My mom has been trying to figure out why we had the picture of this Cheney, and I finally figured it out. I found one article saying that the Cheney Brothers mill was probably the most well-known silk company in the world at that time!

That is very interesting. I will again forward this to my Uncle. He was very interested in the picture. He stated that all of his geneology materials are at his home in NJ, and he is at RI for the summer. But he goes back and forth. Go ahead and e-mail him with what you know. He will be very interested and will tell you what he knows. You can also write to Jacob W. Cheney, 25 Cottage Ave. Manchester, CT 06040
and he may also be able to help you. Uncle Jacob is very old, but his memory is intact and he was around the mills and the family his entire youth. It may be of some help to you. Good luck, and if you are able to get a copy of the picture, please send me one. I will be more than happy to pay for it. My address is: Susan Nickson, 817 Oakwood Belgrade, MT 59714.

Thanks so much.
