I have been unable to find information on my grandfather. He was black, I know he was born in Virginia around 1912 his mothers name was Maude Carter. He was a musician in Chicago, had a band and went by the name Bill Carey. He was an alcoholic who died in Evanston, IL 1963. Rumor has it his body was shipped to Virginia. When he passed he was seeing a woman named LIZ who's son was to escort the casket but got off the train in Indiana.

He's not in the Cook County, Illinois death index. What's your source for his death info?

Thanks for the help.

He died in what used to be Community Hospital in Evanston, Illinois.

No one remebers the bands name but...
He played in a jazz band with a sax player named T.S. Mims and a piano player named Peaches, both male.

Could this be the sax player? Maybe one of his children would know the name of the band?

Could he have died in 1965 instead? There's a James Carey listed at the Cook County Genealogy website who died June 27, 1965.

In the 1930 census for Beverley Manor, Augusta, Virginia there's a james Carter with mother Maud Carter living with his grandmother Bettie L Carter. Would that be him?

Then in 1940 for Evanston ILL James Carey with wife Janie?
