Dear All,

I'm trying to locate ANY information on an Edward George Brown who was born 1893. He died in New Eltham in 1947. Probably born in London, too.

I have tried to search for info, but I don't know how to do it. Can ANYONE experienced assist me?

I've had a look at the FreeBMD website and there are 3 Edward George Brown births registered in 1893. In jun qtr one in Bethnal Green, and another in Hackney. In Sep qtr one in Islington.

If you have any other information, sibling names, parents names etc, I can have a look at the 1901 census and see if I can find anything.

How very kind of you. Well, all I know is he was born 1893, died 1st Nov 1947 in Eltham (New Eltham?) aged 54.

That's all I have...but, I'm darned if I can find out more!

What a pity you don't have anything else. Well I suspose you could do it the hard way. You know when Edward died, if you got a copy of his death certificate, it will have the name of the informant, which if you are really lucky could be either his wife, a child or a sibling. Any of these names would be helpful to you in the following ways:

- a wife's name would help in looking for a marriage certificate - which would have the name of Edward's father
- a child's name would help in looking for the birth of the child, and the birth certificate would give the wifes name (and maiden name) and then you could follow the step above
- a siblings name would help in tracing the family on the 1901 census.

Sorry not to have been of more help, it's a bit unfortunate when you have a reasonably common name in London. Let me know if I can be of any more help.

Well, I've applied (paid for) a death cert. I'd like to get a will, too? Not sure how to do that??

hello paul....have you found out where he is buried??he could be in what they call the falconwood cem,rochester way,eltham se9.you can look up a will at the probate office ,high holborn,london wc2?.if you are nr to london.

Paul, You might find http://www.tedpack.org/begingen.html has some useful tips. A surname like BROWN has disadvantages, as I know from my own family. But you've got two forenames and a date, so that narrows it down to three births, all in East London (Hackney, Bethnal Green and Islington). They are the ones on Free BMD, giving births in the second and third quarters of 1893. It isn't possible to advise you without a bit more information, like names of brothers or sisters (with ages, if available), or of parents. The obvious thing to do is look him up in the 1901 census. The snag is that there they tended to drop the second forename, so you're dealing with a lot of Edward BROWNs aged 7 or 8. Why don't you email me? Good luck!
