Paul, You might find
http://www.tedpack.org/begingen.html has some useful tips. A surname like BROWN has disadvantages, as I know from my own family. But you've got two forenames and a date, so that narrows it down to three births, all in East London (Hackney, Bethnal Green and Islington). They are the ones on Free BMD, giving births in the second and third quarters of 1893. It isn't possible to advise you without a bit more information, like names of brothers or sisters (with ages, if available), or of parents. The obvious thing to do is look him up in the 1901 census. The snag is that there they tended to drop the second forename, so you're dealing with a lot of Edward BROWNs aged 7 or 8. Why don't you email me? Good luck!
