Does anyone have any information on Aaron and Arminta Lilly who lived in Slab Fork?

I know that Aaron married her in 1906 after his first wife Martha died.

She had a maiden name of Shrewsbury.

She lived with Aaron and Martha and the census indicates that she was a cousin and her children 2nd cousins. She had 9 children and 7 that lived.

I'm trying to figure out who was the father of Arminta's children and if anyone has any further information about them.

Please help get past this brick wall!

Thanks

EL Lilly

I know that Arminta's daughter Fannie married my great uncle Manderville Farley. Fannie's obit lists Aaron as her father. Aaron & Martha had a Martha J. Solesbery living with them in 1880. I'm trying to figure out who her parents are also.

Aaron and Armenta were an interesting pair. If you have access to the census you'll find them in the 1900 census listed as Armenta being a cousin and her children being second cousins. Also thanks to the West Virginia culture website I have a copy of their marriage license where they were married in 1906. In a later census, I believe the 1920 census showed her as a mother-in-law living with Levi. I also found Levi's death certificate and it showed his father as being Wash Lily which I think is short for Aaron Washington Lily. Also the 1910 census has Aaron listed as Aron.

Now as for Armenta though I cannot yet prove it I really believe that she is the daughter of Daniel Shrewsbury. Because of their close relations with the Lilly's.
I believe because Aaron and Martha never had any children of their own that I could find that he must have used Armenta as his "outlet".

Any work that is done on this line of the family seems to be breaking new ground. I will be more than happy to share with you any information that I find and hope that you will do likewise.

I hope to come in the spring and visit the Jenny Cole Cemetery as there are so many of our ancestors who are buried there. Also anything that you can send me on Fannie would be wonderful. I really only have information on Levi since he is my direct line in the family.

Wishing you good luck in your endeavors,

EL Lilly

Fannie married Mandeville Farley 10 Dec 1954 Pineville, Wyoming Co. WV. On the marriage license she listed Minta & Wash Lilly as her parents. They were also listed as parents in her obituary from 18 Oct 1974.

On the 1900 Census where Arminta is listed as a Lilly living in the house with Oron & Martha there are several children listed to her. I have found birth records for her children Levi & Charles, last name listed as Solesbury, not Lilly, with no father's name listed. Which may confirm the thought that Aaron was fathering children with Arminta while still married to Martha Whitlock.

I am trying to figure out who the Martha J. Solesberry, 14 yrs, who was living in his home in 1880 belongs to. There is also a 5 yr old Martha Lilly living with him & Martha in 1870 at the home of his father, Robert Lilly.

There is the possibility that she is the same Martha who married George Washington Farley. Parents of the above mentioned Mandeville. They are also my great great grandparents.

I have a note made by a previous researcher regarding this line back in 1955 that states "George Farley married Martha Shrewsberry whose mother married Wash Lilly. This is what makes me think I'm in the right family.

I appreciate the information on Fannie and that you found the others listed as Solesbury. Armenta has always been my white whale that I think I finally pinned down that she was the daughter of Daniel Boone Shrewsbury. I believe her name is spelled Araminta, and in the 1860 census for Mercer County she is shown as being nine months old. In the meantime I will be looking up the information on the West Virginia cultures site to add to my collection of images and information. By the way, I have never been able to find a death certificate for Aaron or Minta. If you ever come across the information I would love to have it and if there is something I can try and fill in for you please don't hesitate to ask.

Thank you,

Estil Lilly

Arminta's sons' birth records are listed on the WV cultures site. Charles is listed as C.S. Solesberry born 22 Dec 1889. Levi's birth is 10 June 1892.

Arminta's death certificate is listed as Mintie Lilly 30 Aug 1929. Information was given by a Jack Bolen who was her daugther Fannie's first husband.

Hope this helps you. Let me know if you find anything on the Martha I'm hunting.

I am very interested in Aaron (or Aron) Lilly and Araminta Shrewsbury. They may be my ancestors. I really appreciate the info about Charles Sullivan and Levi Shrewsbury's birth records, I had been looking for them, although I had found Levi's death certificate there! I have a feeling my family story may be too complicated to explain here. My mother's mother was Mattie Tolbert who was "married" to George W. Shrewsbury (no marriage record has been found). She had 3 children with him, but when the 4th was born (my mom) the family story is that George claimed she wasn't his and Mattie took off because he threatened to kill her. My mom was raised by Mattie's father & step-mother, and the other children were sent to live with other relatives. My mom, who died two years ago, hinted that she had been told that her father was a man named Bedford Lilly. I think she knew more than she would tell me. I believe George Shrewsbury's parents were Aaron and Arminta. He had a sister, according to living relatives, whose married name was Anna Atkinson. Anna's death certificate lists her parents as "Wash and Armenda Lilly". (George's death certificate lists his parents as George Shrewsbury and Hazel Lilly but I believe this may be an error because records seem to indicate that George himself was married to Hazel Lilly.) I have been trying to piece this couple and their families together, especially since in the 1920 census, there was a boy named Bedford Lilly, aged 9, living with Levi Lilly and his family, listed as a boarder. He would have been significantly younger than Mattie Tolbert (who was born in 1898) but he would have been an adult by the time my mom was born in 1933 or 1934. (That's right, we aren't sure exactly when she was born!) I can't find any other info about Bedford Lilly that I can confirm and at the very least, I'd like to figure out his connection to George Shrewsbury and his family. I had my DNA done about a year ago and it seems likely that I am related by blood to the Lilly and Shrewsbury families but I haven't found a connection to any confirmed family trees :(

This is a link to my mom's story, written by me after she died:
